  2. The Caldecott Medal The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

  6. The Newberry Medal The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children

  7. The Newberry Medal • Established in 1922 • Honors an American author who has made a “substantial contribution to American literature for children.”

  8. Who was John Newberry? • 1713-1767 (54 yrs. Old) • British Bookseller – the first to make children’s literature profitable • At 16, he was an apprentice to a book printer – William Carnan. The printer died and left his business to John Newberry when he was 24 years old. A Little Pretty Pocket Book (1743) Known as the “first children’s book”

The Coretta Scott King Medal Given to African American authors and illustrator for outstanding inspirational and educational contributions, the Coretta Scott King Book Award titles promote understanding and appreciation of the culture of all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the American dream.

Award Process • Books published the previous year are submitted to committees for review. • Committee members decide which books will be put on a ballot for voting. • Voting begins and a winner emerges. • A book cannot be both a Caldecott and Newberry winner, but it can receive the Coretta Scott King Award on the same year.
