A Math Tale Jinny has 63 MathSweets but longs for the day when she owns 482 MathSweets. How many more will she need to get to achieve her goal?
[1] My first thought is: What does Jinny have right now? She’s got 63 MathSweets, so I’ll take a look at that collection. Here it is, below: One of these Sticks contains 10 MathSweets [2] Next, I’m thinking: Jinny needs a lot more MathSweets. I know she needs over 400, so I’m going to give her the four Flats below. One of these Flats contains 100 MathSweets
[3] I chose to give four Flats because that was a lot (namely, 400 MathSweets), and if it turned out to be too much, I would have just taken some Flats back. As it happens, now Jinny has: Her Original Stuff Stuff I Gave Her * (* I gave her this to help her reach her goal)
[4] Well, I see she has 463 now, and she needs more. So, I gave her one more Stick right over here… Her Original Stuff Stuff I Gave Her [5] I see she has 473 now. I know if I give her seven MathSweets, that will give her 480 altogether. I know this because: Her three individual MathSweets And seven MathSweets I give her Could be traded for a Stick So then she’d have 4 Flats and 8 Sticks!
[6] So, from what I said in [5] before, I will definitely give her the seven MathSweets. Here they are… Her Original Stuff Stuff I Gave Her [7] And, like I said, I know now that Jinny has 480 altogether. She just needs two more MathSweets and she’ll have her goal of 482.
[8] Here’s the last two MathSweets she needs… Her Original Stuff Stuff I Gave Her [9] When I think about it now looking at what’s above, if she starts with 63 MathSweets, she’ll need another 419 to achieve her goal. For me to check this, I’d push all the pieces together. I count and trade as needed to see if there really were four Flats, eight Sticks, and two Units (482 is how many MathSweets she wanted altogether).
