The Zamperini family moved to Long Beach, California at about the time oil was discovered (in 1921) at Signal Hill.  • Discovery of the Long Beach oil field - especially the gusher at Alamitos well number 1 - converted the city from a seaside resort with some agriculture to an industrial town with a major port.  During the 1920s, the oil field was the most productive in the world.  By the 1930s, Long Beach was known as an oil town. http://www.awesomestories.com/assets/long-beach-1920s
