  1. Jacqueline Woodson Born to write!

  2. Where did her story begin? • Jacqueline Woodson grew up with a true passion for writing. No matter what else she was doing in life, she always wanted to write. • Inspired by the wonderful reaction that she received for writing a fifth grade poem about Martin Luther King, Jr., Jacqueline Woodson got an early start to believing that anything was possible, as long as she had a pen and paper.

  3. What does she write? • She writes fictional stories and poetry (some include autobiographical and biographical content). She makes her words come alive in picture books and novels. • Her inspiration comes from her life. Though you won’t find much from Jacqueline along the lines of autobiographical, she creates her wonderful works of fiction from experience and emotion. • She takes the thoughts and inspirations that she gets from the world around her, and puts pen to paper.

  4. Who does she write for? • Jacqueline Woodson writes her stories for anyone! She has written books ranging from: picture books for young readers to young adult novelsand beyond. • She also writes for herself. Being able to show her emotions, feelings, and imagination on paper gives her a sense of fulfillment.

  5. Why Does She Write? • Jacqueline Woodson writes to convey her deepest thoughts. She writes to share her imagination. Above all, she writes so that others will gain an appreciation for their fellow man. • She writes to celebrate her heritage, and to immortalize the struggles and triumphs that were experienced by her African American ancestors.

  6. Has she won any awards? • Jacqueline Woodson has won many literary awards. • She has won: The Coretta Scott King Award, The Newberry Honor Medal, The Margaret A. Edwards Award, The National Book Award, ALA Notable, The Parents Choice Award, and Detroit Public School Students Favorite Author, and the list goes on…

  7. Why should I read her books? • You should read Jacqueline Woodson’s books because she is a brilliant author. Her endless variety of books is enough to quench any reader’s thirst. It would come as a great surprise if you couldn’t find a book that you would enjoy from Jacqueline Woodson’s abundant collection!
