  1. High Bandwidth Interface for Cameras and Digital Cinema Fraunhofer IIS (S. Foessel, A. Widera) 22th Feb 2006

  2.  Actual situation • Today's and future digital cameras need higher interface bandwidth ≥ 10 Gbit/s • High bandwidth interface between cinema server and projector is one possible solution according DCI spec. • With more and more 2k and 4k DI processes postproduction needs also a higher bandwidth interface

  3.  Application fields

  4.  Proposal • Proposal of a 10 GE interface with real-time features, but also with the option to use as a standard interface • Real-time requirements but also compatibility to IT infrastructure desirable, because of the price and availability • For some applications a robust connector is needed, but not for all (harsh environment and IT environments!)

  5.  Concept – Protocol Application layer Data Transport layer UDP header Data Network layer IP header UDP header Data Network interface Ethernet header IP header UDP header Data Physical network

  6.  Concept - Overview • 10GE standard XFP modules (physical layer) • 10GE standard ethernet clocking and framing allows use of 10GE infrastructure (e.g. switches) • Dedicated links between one data source and one or more destinations guarantees real-time work • UDP/IP protocol allows easy integration in workstations • Topologies: point-to-point or point-to-multipoint • Note: The IF is not intended as a general purpose 10GE network with all possible protocols!

  7.  Concept – Protocol Framing

  8.  Concept • Use of Ethernet Jumbo Frames up to 9000 Bytes • 64/66 Bit encoding / CRC-32 / optional FEC • Payload within a frame can be • Image Data, compressed or uncompressed (e.g. one line of an image per Ethernet frame, or one component of a line) • Audio Data, compressed or uncompressed • Metadata Data • Control Data

  9.  Time schedule • Realization of a complete 10GE link demonstrator and technology study within the next 8 months • Use of the Fraunhofer developments ARRI D20 and megacine field recorder as example • Involvement of the ASC into the requirement definitions and tests (Cooperation is officially defined)

  10.  Contact • Dr. Siegfried FoesselFraunhofer IISGermanyemail: fsl@iis.fraunhofer.de Thank you for your attention!
