Understanding Course Registration

This project aims to improve the course selection and registration process by understanding why students choose certain courses and addressing issues with registration and waitlists. Through research, analysis, and interviews, we are developing models to enhance decision-making and optimize the course registration experience.

Initial Direction We’re going to talk to students, instructors, and advisors in order to gain a better understanding of why students take the courses they do and improve upon the course selection and registration process. • We want to get at problems with registration and waitlists. • We want to enable optimum decision making.

  4. Research & Analysis • 9 Directed Storytelling Interviews • 6 Students • Mix of grad, undergrad • Various programs (Business, Design, English, E&PP) • 2 Instructors • 1 Advisor

  5. Research & Analysis • We clustered key points from our interviews to find common themes. • Initially thought to separate student data from instructor data, but found that they clustered well.

  6. Early Models • Model the decision to take courses — people continually add courses or fluctuate about taking a single course. • Hesitated to suggest any linearity / common path in the decision process.

  7. Early Models • Circular influence model — people were surrounded by a variety of information • Different influences tended to be more prominent than others.

  8. Early Models • Circular model showed effort to get information through the distance from the information to the center.

  9. Early Models • We made lists of commonalities to decide how to cluster the concentric circles.
