  1. NAWIPS Integration withAWIPS Technology Infusion: Status UpdatePaper 8A.314 January 2009 Scott Jacobs David Plummer and Stephen Gilbert NOAA/NWS/National Centers for Environmental Prediction Jason Tuell, Steve Schotz and Ronla Henry NOAA/NWS/Office of Science and Technology

  2. Overview • Provide an update on the migration of NAWIPS to the new AWIPS environment • Review the progress on the NCEP areas of development • NMAP • Product Generation – Drawing • Decoders • GEMPAK functionality 25th IIPS 8A.3: NAWIPS Migration

  3. Project Goals • Provide a unified forecast platform that meets NCEP forecaster needs • Promote collaboration among NWS forecasters and with NOAA partners • Provide an updated software architecture which will allow for a streamlined addition of new software technologies • Provide a system which will accelerate the incorporation of new science into the forecast process • Deliver all NCEP products and services in industry standard formats 25th IIPS 8A.3: NAWIPS Migration

  4. You are here Roadmap 25th IIPS 8A.3: NAWIPS Migration

  5. Re-architecture Approach • Preserve existing NAWIPS functionality • Minimize changes to the user interface • “Grey Box” conversion • Minimizes user training of forecasters and users • Leverage use of AWIPS services, functionality and development tools to optimize migration • Migrate NAWIPS functionality incrementally to AWIPS to reduce risk • Multiple deliveries planned for FY09 and FY10 for testing and evaluation purposes 25th IIPS 8A.3: NAWIPS Migration

  6. FY09 Development ActivitiesNMAP • Goal • Replicate all NMAP functionality in the Common AWIPS Visualization Environment (CAVE) • Complete • NMAP perspective in CAVE • Basic cursor location functionality • Basic data selection • Basic map and overlay selection 25th IIPS 8A.3: NAWIPS Migration

  7. FY09 Development ActivitiesNMAP • Next Steps • Enhance data selection and display • Grids • Observations • Imagery • Add scientific algorithms • Cloud height computation from satellite images • Automated Objective Dvorak Technique (AODT) from satellite images for hurricane classification 25th IIPS 8A.3: NAWIPS Migration

  8. 25th IIPS 8A.3: NAWIPS Migration

  9. 25th IIPS 8A.3: NAWIPS Migration

  10. FY09 Development ActivitiesProduct Generation/Drawing • Goal • Draw the same objects and create the same products as the current NMAP • Complete • Framework established • Basic rendering functionality • Lines, pattern lines, fronts, markers, symbols • Basic GUI management framework • Tool and object palette visible in NMAP perspective • Next Steps • Enhance drawing and editing of objects • Save and Open product files 25th IIPS 8A.3: NAWIPS Migration

  11. 25th IIPS 8A.3: NAWIPS Migration

  12. 25th IIPS 8A.3: NAWIPS Migration

  13. FY09 Development ActivitiesDecoders • Goal • Migrate those decoders that are not part of the initial AWIPS delivery from Raytheon • Complete • Watch Corner Point • Supplemental Climatological Data • Advisory-Watch-Warning • Flash Flood Guidance • In Progress • SIGMET-AIRMET 25th IIPS 8A.3: NAWIPS Migration

  14. FY09 Development ActivitiesDecoders • Next • Evaluate and enhance GRIB decoder • Collaborate with Raytheon to incorporate any modifications in the AWIPS baseline • Ice Drift forecast • BUFR MOS • TAMDAR aircraft data • Hurricane Advisory • Collaboration with SPoRT (NASA-Huntsville) • McIDAS-format satellite data 25th IIPS 8A.3: NAWIPS Migration

  15. FY09 Development ActivitiesGEMPAK Applications • Goal • Provide a batch processing capability as found in the current GEMPAK applications • “Forward compatibility” • Allow legacy applications to access the AWIPS database • Expected completion by March 2009 • Initial design of non-GUI applications • More information is needed from the next Raytheon delivery (TO10 in March 2009) • Includes NCEP users and partners • National Centers development teams • UNIDATA developers 25th IIPS 8A.3: NAWIPS Migration

  16. Summary • NAWIPS Migration is an essential part of the AWIPS Technology Infusion • Migration effort began in October 2008 • Migration continuing through FY09 and FY10 • Deployment planned for the first quarter FY11 • Migration will improve NWS collaboration • Migration will improve NCEP products and services • Positions development team to more easily meet future NCEP requirements 25th IIPS 8A.3: NAWIPS Migration
