Old Business Updates from 2010 Advisory Board Meeting • TN Complete College Act – measuring college performance funding based on graduation number vs. fall enrollment numbers and UP transfer path • Retention Efforts – meet Countance Anderson • Grant funded retention efforts/activities • Request for Clinical Informatics by WTH • Several meetings/discussions to determine exact need • Results: Cross training of currently employed medical professionals and clinicians on medical knowledge and information systems • Currently partnering with Community College consortium grant opportunity to develop a certificate/AAS concentration focusing on this need

Old Business Continued • Within meetings at WTH, other training needs were evaluated and JSCC Continuing Ed provided workforce improvement classes – Jack Laser • National Career Readiness Certificate testing – • Tested BIC intern students in Fall 2010, next group set to test in the upcoming weeks. Of ___ testing in fall, results:

Business Program Curriculum Changes • Development of “university tract” in community college curriculum all transferable to universities (from TCCA) • Several UP degree programs had curriculum altered to meet the state wide mandate of course transferability • In BIC, AA/AS Accounting, Business Administration and Information Systems changes go into effect Fall 2011 • Changes to JSCC’s Business programs: • Remove Bus 111 (Introduction to Business), Bus 231 (Business Statistics) • Add Math 1530 (Statistics and Probabilities), 4 hours of guided electives – we will recommend Bus 211 (Legal Environment of Business)

New Course: HIM 201 • HIM 201 Introduction to Health Information Management – This course introduces students to the principles of Health Information Management through the understanding of Health Information Technology. Topics covered are based on the core competencies defined by AHIMA, as well as HIPPA Regulations AND JACHO recommendations that provide connectivity and applications that make up Health Information Systems of today. • Jayne Lowery will develop and instruct.

  7. New Course: Bus 215 • Bus 215 Entrepreneurship/Small Business Management: This course gives students the knowledge and competencies they need to start and manage a business of their own. Topics covered include business ethics, preparing a business plan, accounting, finance, management, and marketing, as well as special emphasis on customer service, which is so important in today’s competitive business environment. • John Tibbs to oversee development/instruction.

Efforts on Additional Funding • Department of Labor/C3T Consortium Grant – partnering with other TN community colleges to jointly show the demand/funding for: • Logistics/Supply Chain Management* • Health Informatics* • Industrial Process Control • Energy • Hospitality/Management • Lumina Grant – awarded for focusing on accelerated/block scheduling/cohort based education • Business Management* • General Education* • Pre Allied Health*

  13. Continued Grant Funding for BIC Perkins IV Grant Perkins IV Reserve Grant Green Energy Grant

  14. Newer Technology May have seen/read about Jackson State being awarded a USDA grant “Rural Utilities Services (RUS)” for $485,000. This grant will be used to purchase distance learning equipment in seven counties in West Tennessee to ‘beam’ classes to the rural area high schools for dual enrollment courses or for evening college classes. Let’s go see a demonstration of how it works… Then we’ll conclude meeting with your feedback!
