  1. Blood

  2. Function • transport of materials to and from the cells

  3. Simple organisms • single celled organisms use diffusion and osmosis to obtain nutrients and get rid of waste

  4. Complex Organisms • circulatory system brings nutrients to cells and removes waste

  5. BLOOD • The body’s pickup and delivery system

  6. Two Parts • 45% cells • 55% plasma

  7. Cells • red blood cells (RBC’s) • white blood cells (WBC’s) • platelets

  8. RBC’s • Carry oxygen • small • biconcave disks • increases surface area • contain hemoglobin ( include iron) • no nucleus • live about 120 days

  9. WBC’s • Defend body from microorganisms • large • have nucleus • different types • live for different length of time depending on type

  10. Platelets • help in clotting • cell fragments

  11. Plasma • transport of nutrients, gases and waste • consists of • water - 92% • proteins • albumins - maintain osmotic pressure • globulins - immunity • fibrinogen - blood clotting

  12. nutrients • amino acids • lipids • sugars • gases • oxygen • carbon dioxide • electrolytes • sodium, chlorine, potassium, etc. • maintain osmotic pressure & pH • metabolic waste • urea

  13. Disorders • Go to biojones.pbworks.com • Click on Diseases of the Circulatory System • Scroll to the bottom of the page • Use the web site and take notes on the causes, symptoms, treatment and changes in the blood in anemia, leukemia and Rhematic Fever.
