There have been many exciting investment options for NRI investors who are looking to maximize their corpus in India by investing in different asset classes.

  3. Prerequisites for NRIs before contemplating investment in India: • NRIs need to have NRE or NRO bank account • · They will have to fulfil the KYC requirements • · They may have to take care of additional FATCA disclosures

  4. Let us now look at some of the most lucrative investment options for NRIs in India Mutual funds • NRIs can invest in Indian mutual funds since they do not face many major constraints with regards to mutual fund investment in India. Prior RBI approval will also not be required for NRI investors in Indian mutual funds.NRIs can easily get their money that they have invested in India repatriated through using their NRE account. However, they need to fulfil the KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements. Please note that there might be some additional compliance requirements for the US and Canada citizens.

  5. National Pension Scheme • NRI investors can also explore the national pension scheme (NPS) option for investment. This is also a lucrative option to secure financial future while growing their money.

  6. Real estate • For NRIs looking to park a larger corpus in India, real estate is a real good option for investing. They can invest directly in a property in India and rent it out to gain from monthly rent income, which can be deposited into their NRE account. They can also invest in the real estate sector of India indirectly through investing in real estate funds. Most real estate funds also offer SIP option.

  7. FCNR deposits • NRIs can invest in a Foreign Currency Non-Resident Deposit Account, which is a fixed deposit account that one can only maintain in foreign currency. This account can be opened in six currencies. The interest on FCNR deposits is tax-free and the proceeds can be fully repatriated.

  8. NRE FD Account • NRIs can also consider investing in NRE FD account. This is especially for those NRIs who are conservative and want a risk-free investment option in Indian currency. Again, the proceeds from this investment can be fully repatriated. The interest income on this FD is also tax-free.

  9. Direct equity investments • NRIs can invest in the Indian equity markets only through portfolio investment schemes or the PIS route. You may earn high returns through this route although this may involve high risks.
