  12. The 5 Most Dynamic Leaders in the Education Sector T universities, administrations, and societies. Meet Dr Madhukar Angur, Founder and Chancellor of Alliance University. The irony of this dichotomy is that the target often does not know they are finagled. There will likely be sizeable income and societal differences between the two groups. The online student may not recognize that they are being paid systematically less, advance more slowly in their careers, and generally not appreciate the benefits of a broad education. Will there be exceptions? Of course, yes. However, eventually, the market segments, in terms of long-term earnings and success, will appear. The complex- ity of the data may mask the online statistical underperformance, and this dichotomy may not be fully detected. It could also be when repaying student debt with less income capacity. second best, they must choose online. However, a large portion also select online simply for convenience. Some are merely interested in picking up a diploma/degree (wall art). It is not uncommon for students to select online classes even when living in hostels/dorms. Like a double-edged sword, the internet allows homework and term papers to be outsourced at reasonable prices. he most dynamic leader in the education sector has the most precise solution to the most significant challenge faced by all: educators, students, schools, According to Dr Angur, the first obvious answer to the question of major challenge would be the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on education. “However, I would like to explain, in simple terms, the biggest challenge facing us is the pervasive dichotomy evolving, particularly in higher education,” he states. The Cost of Systemic Ignorance Ultimately, do these students realize that the online experience, even with the support of the most sophisticated AI, does not provide the same experience and results as the traditional program? Has anyone informed them of these costs? Perhaps the online advisor when they register online for the first time? The dean or the department chair? Is it commonly discussed in the media, providing not so much a warning but simply information? Can incoming students, often first-generation college students, and their parents be that naïve? Apparently. In the Blissful Disguise of Half-Knowledge He furthers that, on the one hand, we have the traditional brick-and-mortar, students-in-the-seats experience; going to a classroom for lectures or labs is a long-established tradition. In-class exams, eye contact with your peers and professor, and, most importantly, co-curricular and extra- curricular experiences are enormously important for a student’s education and development. The traditional campus will survive indefinitely. There will always be a market for the Ivy Towers. Any perpetrators of this dichotomy ought to have a cast of players. First up are the university administrators. Budget- ary issues have driven them, with the allure of easy online money and the promise of AI-enhanced learning. Of course, students will be happy with these courses; they grew up in the electronic information age. Administrators have a variety of sanctimonious rationales for these programs that no one seems to challenge. For instance, they claim that distance learning increases student diversity, especially in geography. After all, look at the massive gaps in employability across disciplines, even for students with regular college degree(s). This gap is multiplied manifold for students with online degrees. Despite this, students can naively grasp the online degree program and assume it provides the same ultimate benefits as the traditional degree. Recognizing the Core Issue On the other hand, there is online education, where a student can receive an entire degree remotely without ever stepping on campus. Highly recognizable universities worldwide provide such degrees and traditional campus programs. Online degree programs also have little or no physical campus structure. In either case, can online education's quality, experience, and final product be equivalent to traditional education? Most emphatically—NO. Another player is the federally/state-sanctioned accredita- tion agencies. Regional accreditation agencies evaluate the entire university and accreditation for programs like business, law, engineering or nursing. People generally do not know that the accreditation process and reaccreditation reviews are peer-conducted by administrators and faculty from other universities/agencies. One of the unsung reasons for their existence is that they provide (minimum) assurance of quality. Their regulatory oversight helps to prevent state officials or university boards from delving too deeply into questions of quality or relevance. Admittedly, they have been active in raising questions and providing standards regarding online learning and the integration of AI. is despite dedicated faculty creatively employing the most current online technology, methodologies, and AI-based tools. The Irony of the Contrast Enter the prospect of AI in education. AI can bridge the gap between traditional and online education by providing personalized learning experiences, automating administra- tive tasks, and offering virtual tutoring. While AI cannot replace the value of in-person interactions, it can enhance online education and make it more competitive with the traditional campus experience. Many traditional campuses are faced with declining enrollment because of demographics. There are real budgetary crises, especially if you must keep full-time faculty employed and the research wheels greased. Picture the empty hallways, classrooms, and coffers, all the ingredients that necessitate the big store revenue. “Please note, my comments are not about the emergency COVID-19 education measures taken these past few years and are likely to repeat themselves if another wave of something like COVID-19 comes through. We are discussing the persis- tence of online degree education and the incorporation of AI to enhance the experience.” Paulo Freire’s quote, ‘The teacher and the taught together create the teaching,’ is so profound that even today, this wonderful philosophy, if used in its truest sense, can create a strong culture of innovation and significant adaptability in education at all levels. However, just a few decades ago, a main campus might have had accreditation issues if they started an off-campus site on an obscure facility a few hours away, with some classrooms and instructors but no library or lab facility. Now, anything goes with distance learning and AI-enhanced education. Even though they are often priced identically, marketed to leave an impression that the degree is equally recognized, and even using the same instructors, the results of the two differ. The traditional campus, with all the incremental experiences, provides a far superior education. A sizeable majority of professors will agree with that assessment. This The students themselves are players, too. Many students have little choice but to opt for online programs because of various circumstances. Even if they realize the program is

  14. emerging technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality, machine learning aspects and artificial intelligence to engage students in innovative ways. As decades pass, this will create a segment of society that will be disillusioned by never achieving their dreams or full potential. They have the best intentions. This online education, even with AI's potential to enhance learning, will leave a significant portion of their generation a lost generation, and no one will know what happened. Pedagogy of the Oppressed, there is a quote viz., “The teacher and the taught together create the teach- ing” is so profound that even today, this wonderful philosophy, if used in its truest sense, can create a strong culture of innovation and significant adaptability in education at all levels. Additionally, building on collaboration and networking among educators, students, and industry professionals, using a student-centred approach wherever possible that allows students to take ownership of their education, thereby providing opportunities for students the concept of “voice and choice” in the learning process. EdTech Enhanced Wisdom The emergence of AI has brought together educators and others from all walks of life to explore perspectives, provide deep insights and reflections not delved into prior, examine implications on teaching and learning, and share fears, hopes and apprehensions. Hence, innovativeness has to become so glaring in collaborative learning and teaching that adaptability becomes a natural outcome with such innovations. India has been inundated with Education Technology (EdTech) platforms, which mushroomed over the past decade and grew in size, particularly during the pandemic. However, the teaching and learning that supposedly occurred during the hay days are still questionable. Distributed learning and blended learning methodologies are being experimented with mixed results in various institutions of higher learning. Data-driven decision-making that enables tracking student progress and adjusting teaching methodologies accordingly is yet another way to promote a culture of innovation. Finally, the all-important community engagement involving parents, caregivers, and the community in the educational process provides the undisputed overarching mechanism for fostering and promoting a culture of innovation and adaptability in the education sector. Therefore, promoting and fostering a culture of innovation and adaptability in the education sector involves a combina- tion of organizational strategies, pedagogical approaches, and an effective integration of technology. As a developing country with a significantly higher GDP growth index, India will certainly want a higher Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education. Presently, the GER is approximately 27 per cent, which is much less compared to that of developed countries. No matter how sophisticated AI gets with any degree of AI- enabled integration occurring in distance or distributed learning, it cannot replace face-to-face learning completely. Yes, AI will make a select group of jobs obsolete. However, new skills and enhanced adaptive skill development will evolve, and universities and higher education institutions must always be cognizant of this regarding knowledge creation and dissemination. Education is not only about disseminating knowledge but, more importantly, about creating knowledge or knowledge discovery. Hence, staying abreast of the latest trends and research in various walks of life is absolutely crucial for making informed decisions that benefit educators, students, and the larger knowledge community. Providing Voice and Choice While AI has the potential to improve online education and bridge the gap between traditional and online learning experiences, it is essential to recognize that it cannot replace the value of in-person interactions and the overall campus experience. As higher education continues to evolve, universities, administrators, and students must know the differences between online and traditional education and make informed decisions about their academic pursuits. The integration of AI in education should be approached with caution and a realistic under- standing of its limitations, ensuring that the technology serves as an enhancement rather than a replacement for a well-rounded education. It is a challenge to promote a culture of innovation in the higher education sector, and educational institutions may want to consider incorporating some of the following guidelines, which include, (a) Encouraging a growth mindset--that embraces challenges and sees failure as an opportunity to learn and improve and promote the idea that intelligence and abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work; (b) Professional development by investing in continuous development for educators to keep them updated on the latest pedagogical approaches, technological advancements, and educational research; The holistic education continues to be an absolute essential now and in the future. The Profoundly Wonderful Philosophy (c) Flexible learning environment created for handling different learning styles, which embraces more project- based learning and interdisciplinary approaches to encour- age critical thinking and problem-solving, among other skills; This is where Dr Angur’s approach makes all the difference: to foster and promote a culture of innovation and adaptabil- ity in the education sector. Dr Angur says it is important to revisit history somewhat (Freire, 1968). Paulo Freire, a Brazilian educator and philosopher, advocated a collabora- tive approach to education—wherein both the educator and the learner contribute to the learning process. In his book (d) Effective technology integration into the curriculum to enhance teaching and learning experiences and explore

Serving on community advisory boards, providing accessi- bility to university facilities, and having initiatives that promote health and wellness programs that contribute to community well-being will go a long way in establishing the university as a positive force in the region. Dr Angur further adds that ‘Holistic education,’ which encompasses the development of intellectual skills and emotional, social, physical, and ethical dimensions, among others, can contribute significantly to the personal and professional development of students/graduates. In the current scenario, it has become even more necessary for educators to focus on curriculum development and inculcate ethics and overall human values among students. Hence, holistic education continues to be an absolute necessity now and in the future. Fostering a Mindset of Growth via Adversities Dr Angur’s leadership encapsulates education and academia and engages with the community at a wider scale. He ardently believes that educational leaders play a crucial role in extending the influence and impact of a university beyond the campus and into the larger community. He says, “In my personal experience, some of how this can be achieved include nurturing community partnerships with businesses, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and community groups.” According to Dr Angur, various strategies and programs are designed to help students overcome challenges and foster a mindset that views failures as opportunities for growth. These initiatives often fall under Promoting a Growth Mindset and Cultivating Resilience (PGMCR). Many programs/interventions are being introduced and practised, including Growth Mindset Interventions, Social and Emotional Learning Programs, etc., that focus on develop- ing students' social and emotional skills, including self- awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and interpersonal skills. These community-based engagements' tangible and intangible impacts significantly enhance public perception and increase community support, attracting diverse talent. Stronger alum engagement and strategic partnerships with key entities can position the university as a valuable contributor to community development. In simple terms, holistic education contributes to broad skill development among students, builds adaptability and resilience, develops well-rounded individuals, enhances the overall ethical and moral development among graduates, and provides a lifelong learning orientation. Thus, holistic education contributes to graduates' personal and professional success by providing a comprehensive and balanced approach to learning. Graduates are not only academically competent but also can become equipped with the skills, values, and mindset needed to navigate the complexities of modern life and succeed in their chosen careers. Effective leadership approaches that extend beyond the campus and engage with the broader community can significantly impact the university's reputation, contributing to its overall success and influence. Constant Community Engagement These partnerships can lead to collaborative projects, shared resources, and mutual support. Additionally, service learning and civic engagement must be widely practised, as is being done at some renowned US Universities. Universi- ties engage themselves in solving the problems of the neighbouring communities scientifically. This is popularly known as the “Road Scholarship” program. Other forms of community engagements also include public events and outreach, educational programs for the community, and research and innovation transfer, usually referred to as the “LAB to LAND” policy. Other programs under the PGMCR include Mindfulness and well-being programs; Failure–Tolerant Programs, Incorporating Failure Narratives; Project Learning, Feedback, and Reflection; Peer Mentoring and Support Programs; Goal Setting and Progress Monitoring; Character Education Programs; and Community Involvement and Service Learning, among others. The Nectar of Learning In his advice to the budding aspirants entering educational leadership roles, Dr Angur says that education leadership is a dynamic and evolving responsibility that requires, among other things, adaptability, empathy, and a commitment to continuous improvement. One of the fundamental covets of leadership requirements is to embrace lifelong learning. It becomes absolutely important to stay curious and commit- ted to ongoing learning. The field of education is continu- ously evolving, and effective leaders are willing to adapt, learn from experiences, and stay informed about the next best practices. Implementing a combination of these strategies within an educational setting can create a supportive environment where students feel empowered to face challenges, view failures as opportunities for growth, and develop the resilience needed to succeed in their academic, professional and personal lives. An Integrated Academic-Industry Curriculum Dr Angur also believes that integrating academia with industry is highly important for the overall development of all the players —the taught community and the teachers. This collaboration between academia and practice obvi- ously brings several benefits that contribute to the players' holistic education and future success. For instance, an often cited but extremely relevant example is that of Silicon Valley in the USA, which is a result of its “geo-academic” location surrounded by several world-class universities, thereby fostering mutual growth and innovation. A Diversely All-Inclusive Leadership Among other leadership qualities required in any individ- ual, it is particularly important to cultivate emotional intelligence comprising empathy, self-awareness, and effective communication for building positive relationships and fostering a supportive environment. It also requires prioritizing inclusivity and diversity, recognizing the value of diverse perspectives, and creating opportunities for all individuals to feel heard, respected and included. Another important aspect of being an efficient leader in an academic environment is to develop stronger community engagement. Dr Angur also believes that leadership styles prioritising inclusivity and diversity are crucial for creating a positive and equitable environment. Some key elements that one can incorporate to promote inclusivity and diversity in an academic setting include a commitment to equity, fac- ulty/employee governance, open communication, diverse representation, cultural competence, equitable policies and practices, professional development opportunities, intersectionality awareness, accessibility and inclusivity in the curriculum; data-informed decision making; and of course intensive community engagement. Some of the key reasons for this integration include Real World Relevance, Skill Development, Networking Opportu- nities, Exposure to Current Industry Trends, Enhanced Employability Skills, Innovation and Research Opportuni- ties, Applied Research and Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Start-up Culture exposure to diversity of Perspectives, and Global Competitiveness in programs. 32. Entrepreneurial leaders approach these hurdles with a "can- do" attitude, seeking creative solutions and fostering a culture of collaboration to overcome obstacles. across disciplines and cultures is essential for success. Educational leaders must create opportunities for students to collaborate on projects, solve problems together, and learn from one another's perspectives. By fostering a collaborative spirit, educational leaders not only prepare students for success in the workforce but also instil in them a sense of empathy, compassion, and global citizenship. Building a Culture of Innovation: Just like a startup thrives on fresh ideas, an education system led by an entrepreneurial spirit encourages experimentation and calculated risk-taking. This fosters a dynamic learning environment where students are encouraged to think critically and develop solutions to real-world problems. Furthermore, cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset requires educational leaders to provide students with real- world learning experiences that connect classroom learning to the world beyond school walls. Whether through internships, apprenticeships, project-based learning, or community service initiatives, educational leaders must create opportunities for students to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world settings, solve authentic problems, and make a positive impact in their communities. By bridging the gap between theory and practice, educational leaders can help students develop the confidence, competence, and entrepreneurial spirit they need to succeed in an increasingly complex and interconnected world. Financial paperwork strategy One of the key components of cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset in educational leadership is fostering a culture of innovation and creativity. Educational leaders must create environments where students are encouraged to think outside the box, explore new ideas, and take risks in pursuit of their goals. By fostering a spirit of creativity and innovation, educational leaders empower students to become active participants in their own learning journey and prepare them to tackle the challenges of the future with confidence and ingenuity. Moreover, cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset requires educational leaders to instil a sense of resilience and perseverance in students. In an increasingly volatile and uncertain world, the ability to bounce back from failure, adapt to change, and overcome obstacles is essential for success. Educational leaders must teach students that failure is not a sign of weakness, but rather an opportunity for growth and learning. By fostering a growth mindset—one characterized by a belief in one's ability to learn and grow through effort and perseverance—educational leaders can help students develop the resilience and grit they need to thrive in the face of adversity. Thus, though the outdated image of an educational leader might conjure a stern principal or a bookish professor, the winds of change are blowing with this emerging breed of new leaders – ones with the resourcefulness, innovation, and risk-taking spirit of entrepreneurs. In short, cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset in educational leadership is essential for preparing students for success in the 21st century. By fostering a culture of innovation, creativity, resilience, collaboration, and real-world learning, educational leaders can empower students to become lifelong learners, critical thinkers, and problem solvers who are equipped to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the future with confidence and resilience. As life's school continues to evolve, educational leaders must embrace their role as catalysts for change and champions of innovation, inspiring students to embrace their inner entrepreneur and seize the opportunities that lie ahead. Additionally, cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset requires educational leaders to foster a culture of collaboration and teamwork. In today's interconnected world, the ability to work effectively with others, communicate ideas, and collaborate 30 | February, 2024 www.insightssuccess.in

  38. W fantastic real saga. Imran Rautan's story is like that; sounds a bit like a fairy tale, calling for a movie adaptation. The story is of how starting from zero, Imran has become a hero by launching Litvill Lessons Association–A non-profit organisation to help children learn English. e cannot deny that fiction is a fantabulous version of reality. Although sometimes, fiction pales in comparison with an enchantingly support to attend his once-wishful university. First, he was hesitant. As a sole breadwinner of a family of five, he could not afford to quit his full-time job. However, the opportunity was a great temptation as it was perhaps his last opportunity to study further and pursue his dream. He accepted her offer, though she was unsure if he could do it alongside a full-time job. Regardless, she was committed and willing to risk her money for a 'social experiment,' as she favourably referred to it. The epic starts with a poor, stone-polishing Indian boy who has recently launched his non-profit company to help disadvantaged kids like him around India fulfill their utmost potential. Imran attended the university from morning to afternoon, then did his full-time job until midnight. This routine went on for three years, including Saturdays and Sundays. It was assertively challenging, but encouragingly, he was one of the best students at the University of Jaipur. His appetite for learning grew stronger, and he continued to finish his master's degree. This year, he even earnt a scholarship from a foreign university to pursue PhD studies. Imran grew up in a kind of slum. Only a few lucky children go to school from his community; instead, most of them go straight to work at a very young age. Though Imran had to do stone polishing after classes from the tender age of eight, he still managed the accomplishment of finishing secondary school. The Meaning of Real Happiness Nonetheless, after his schooling, he went to work at a small hotel. There were few options for him. His family was too poor to pay university fees, though his dream was to do further studies. Undeterred by his upbringing, he always wanted a better life; cars, fancy sunglasses and a long coat. In the hotel, he realized that most rich people with cars, sunglasses, and long coats speak English. He thought if he spoke English, he could be just like them. So he started to learn English by himself, firstly by using English newspapers left behind by the guests he aspired to be like. All the hotel guests were his tutors. He used to ask them many questions about words and phrases he picked up in his inspired studies. By this time, Imran realized that big cars, sunglasses and long coats are meaningless. What makes you truly happy One day a foreign lady (Dolores) arrived at the hotel, and as usual, he asked her to explain some English phrases on his plate for the day. Dolores was impressed by Imran's genuine learning method. Astute Method and Inquisitive Enthusiasm Imran asked her if she could help him to learn English. This proved most fortuitous, as she was an expert in learning theories, and so, out of curiosity, she agreed. Learning English Imran did 80% of the learning by himself, and 20% of the time, she guided him on his path online. The results were promising; he could easily communicate with his hotel guests in less than six months. 40. Highlighting the initial challenges that he had to surmount to ensure Litvill's success rate reached greater heights, Imran says one of the challenges was accommodating the students to a new way of learning English. Most Indian students are used to learning anything through spoon-feeding. Their opinion doesn't matter; they are supposed to regurgitate what they are taught. However, when the students enroll at Litivill Lessons, they find… And the benefits their students get through their 60-30-10 formula are: Another thing our clients' value is that they get international exposure which is very rare for Indian kids, and it is an excellent experience if kids have international exposure at an early age. Furthermore, our senior students can teach junior students which provides them with an English- speaking environment and this is the biggest problem with most English learners.” Students master the self-learning skills that most students lack. Students get international exposure through European English Teachers. Students get an English-speaking environment through the model where senior students teach junior students. That gives them the opportunity to use in real life what they learnt. Students receive financial support, through their tutoring system. In which their senior students teach junior students they pay their senior students to practice with their junior students. Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ A Completely New Way of Learning As an emerging leader in the dynamic business arena, Imran's advice to budding aspirants willing to enter the business world is straightforward. He says, "I would advise future educational companies to focus on the products that help the students to master self-learning.” On envisioning Litvill's operations with the emerging technologies and automated tools that are revolutionizing the business world by enabling innovations, Imran concludes, "The more automated system would make our operations easier, as our e-modules for, however, our 60- 30-10 formula has a more human touch to keep the students motivated.” …partly because of the self-learning method, partly because the teachers (mentors) want to know their opinion about everything. Litvill Lessons is focused 60% on self-learning and 40% of learning happens in online classes. Ÿ Self-Learning and Global Exposure "We chose this method not only because it is cheap and effective, but this is the future. We want our learners to use their brains, and become independent learners who can make their own decisions. In the beginning, most students find self-learning difficult because they are not used to it. Our method might deter new students and we have to make extra efforts to convince them that the method works, but this is our mission to change the way our kids learn in India," he explains. Revealing their professional values and qualities, Imran says, "Our clients value the way we teach English because through our 60-30-10 formula they get to learn how to become good at self-learning which most parents find interesting as it forces the students to use their brains. Another challenge is reaching out to a wider audience. As they are a non-profit organization, they have a modest budget for marketing. "In this crowded market where you have many for-profit competitors with deep funding, it becomes challenging for non-profit companies like us to be heard in the market," says Imran. On the other hand, they do not want to spend money on marketing; "We rather spend that money on providing quality teachers for our learners," he says. Nevertheless, he and his team are trying to find alternative ways to spread their message. They are open to collaborating with other companies and educational institutes in any possible way. deep within is to do something good for others. There might be millions upon millions of Indian kids just like him who have no opportunity to study but have tremendous untapped potential. With this aim, Imran and Dolores started to work on an online English platform. Together, they founded Litvill Lessons to help predominantly school-going kids in India improve their English language and thinking skills. Imran, who is now the Founder and CEO strongly believes that if he could make it so far, others can also make it with the help of Litvill Lessons. A Distinctive Formula Imran reveals that the inspiration behind venturing into the business arena comes from his own small achievements. "I realized that if I can make it so far, other kids can also make it if the same model can be provided to them, where they get international exposure, English speaking environment, master self-learning skills, and financial help. We looked around but we didn't find this model, and then we started Litvill Lessons which is based on the same model to replicate my own story.” Telling more about their distinctive offerings, Imran says what makes them unique and different is their 60-30-10 formula, which is rare to find. This formula offers: Cutting Edge E-modules for self-learning. European English Teachers. English Speaking Environment (Litvill's senior students teach junior students).
