Conducting a Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) • Identify and define target behavior (observable and measurable); what negatively interferes with student’s learning, or distracting to others. • Gather information and collect data on behavior; how frequent is it, how long does it last, what are the antecedents, etc. • Develop a hypothesis for why the behavior is occurring based on the information and data collected. • Develop a behavior intervention plan; what can you do to help the student turn this negative behavior into a positive behavior.

  3. FBA (continued) • Choose reinforcement strategies; what techniques will you use to reinforce positive behaviors so that the student continues to use these behaviors. • Evaluate your plan; what worked and what didn’t, is there something better that you can do to help the student.

  4. Replace the Negative Reinforcement of Problem Behaviors with Reinforcements for Appropriate Behavior. • Students will begin to display positive behaviors without cues. • No negative consequences for negative behavior. • Focuses on the cause of behavior and teaches appropriate behavior.

  5. Positive Reinforcements • Watch for activities students enjoy. • Watch for what students are interested in; using things students enjoy increase motivation. • These activities can be educational and related to the curriculum. • Be careful not to over-do positive reinforcements.
