What does a school counselor do cont. • Elementary Counseling involves more of a mental health/whole student approach to counseling as opposed to providing guidance for course-and career selection. • Studies show that all students, not just those at risk or having learning problems, exhibit higher academic scores and improved classroom behaviors when guidance counselors teach character education and social and emotional coping skills. School Counselor

What does a School Counselor do cont. • Counselors help students develop healthy perceptions of themselves , achieve academic and social success and believe in their competencies and abilities to learn. • Counselors use curricular, standards, and research based lessons and methods to develop and teach social and emotional learning (SEL) skills to students at all grade levels. In what way does the Counselor interact with students? • Monthly classroom visits unless the teacher requests additional visits. • Counselors teaches monthly lessons based on Onslow County’s character education standards, Internet safety, bullying, school readiness and more. • Counselor facilitates various small student groups such as social skills, anger management, study skills and friendship.   5. In what way does the Counselor interact with students cont.? • Counselor sees children on an individual bases upon request either by the teacher, the parent, or the student him/herself. School Counselor

How can I assist parents or guardians of elementary students? • Counselor acts as SWE school’s 504 plan coordinator. • Short term crisis intervention • Provides support to students who are troubled by academic, physical, emotional, or social concerns. • Consults with and provides resources to parents and staff. • Resource for families dealing with various life events. • Works closely with our military liaison and MFLAC (Military and Family Life Counselor). What does a CYB- MFLAC do? • Tatianna Brooks-Johnson is Southwest Elementary School’s Child and Youth Behavioral Military and Family Life Counselor. • Licensed Clinical Social Worker who specializes in child and youth behavioral issues. • MFLAC is available at no cost to children and youth, parents, family members, and staff. • Provides short-term, non-medical counseling support. • Provides a wide range of support to military children , youth, family members and staff. CYB-MFLAC

What does a CYB-MFLAC do cont.? • Services include: • Activities with children and youth • Behavioral interventions in the classroom, at camps, and in child development centers to assist staff in setting and managing boundaries. • Modeling behavior and providing feedback to staff. • Being available to parents and staff to discuss interactions with children or other concerns. • Facilitating psycho-educational groups. CYB-MFLAC

In what way does the MFLAC interact with students? • Monthly visits to classrooms throughout the month to teach social skills lessons based on Onslow County’s character education standards. • Meets with students in small groups related to social skills, anger management, deployment and family separation and friendship groups. • Meets with students individually who have signed permission slips from their parents or guardians. • All meetings with students, staff and/or parents are confidential.
