  1. AppendixQuestions 1. pg246—what are the effectS (meaning list more than one) of a language shrinking? 2. What are examples of Newspeak rules? 3. How does it benefit the government to uncomplicated speech?

  2. Chapter 1 • Pg 7—summarize the purpose of the telescreen. Do we have anything similar? • Explain Winston’s job at the Ministry of Truth? • Describe the two minutes of hate? • What is the purpose of two minutes of hate? • Why was it impossible not to join in? (If you don’t know, look up Mob Mentality and see if that helps.)

  3. Chapter 2 • Pg 23, ¶ 2 beginning with “Suddenly”—In this paragraph the kids change. What connections can you make to this paragraph and description.

  4. Chapter 3 Pg 32—“The enemy of the moment always represented absolute evil, and it followed that any past or future agreement with him was impossible.” What are modern connections to this quote. Pg 32—Winston discusses how he literally changes history. • In what ways is history manipulated?   • Why is history manipulated or changed?   • What are the effects of changing or spinning history?

  5. Chapter 4 • Summarize the type of entertainment that that the government gives to the proles and why they give them that type of entertainment.

  6. Chapter 5 Pg 47, ¶ 4 beginning with “One”. Explain why the party does not like people who are too intelligent and speak plainly. Pg 50 ¶ 8—why did the kid turn the stranger in? What are your thoughts about her reasoning or actions?

  8. Chapter 7 1. Pg 61—Why would people support a government that makes it hard to even get cooking pans? (If you get stuck, think about what makes people desperate.) 2. Pg61—Paraphrase why the two women are fighting? • Explain why Winston is disgusted with the argument. Hint—he’s not disgusted that they’re fighting or that they’re fighting over objects. 3. Pg61—Winston compares the Prolesto animals. Can you make any connections to that? (Ever heard of another group being compared to animals? Ever seen any group act like animals? What do they have in common? )

  9. Ch 7 continued 4. Discuss the Proles: • Who are they? • Why are they stupid/uneducated? • Why would the Party want such a large group of it’s people to be uneducated and stupid? Or • Winston says, ““To keep [the Proles] in control was not difficult.” What makes them easy to control? 5. When referring to the Proles what’s the message that the author is making about education? 6. What’s the effect of the Proles not having Telescreens? 7. Can you make any connections between the Proles and our current society? OR do you feel like the argument Orwell’s making is legitimate?

  10. CH 7 continued 8. Pg 62 and 63, Italicized passage. Analyze this passage about what are written in the textbooks. (Jumping off points: What information seems to have been changed? Who does the textbook seem to dislike? What does the textbook want the kids to learn/think? How do they accomplish their mission?) 9. After reading this chapter, do you think that history is alterable? If no why not? If yes, what parts can be altered and how?

  12. Part II—Chapter 1 • pg 88—Why does Winston assume that she’s an enemy who want to harm him? What has Big Brother done to him?

  13. Part II—Chapter 2 • Pg 104—“I hate purity, I hate goodness. I don’t want any virtue to exist anywhere. I want everyone to be corrupt to the bones.” Is Winston good person? Why would he make statements like this?

  14. Part II—Chapter 3 • Pg 112—Julia believes that we should “accept it as a low of nature that the individual is always defeated.” Do you believe this is true? Why/Why not?

  16. Part II Chapter 5 Pg 127—what are they only ways people can rebel against the Party? What does that remind you of? Discuss the similarities and differences and how those connections make you feel. Pg 127-128—Summarize Julia’s attitude towards the wars and rewriting of history.   • What would make her feel this way? • How do you feel about her and her take on these events? • Are there any modern people who have been through similar issues?

One knew that is was all rubbish, so why let oneself be worried by it?” What are the consequences of thinking this way? What are the benefits? pg 129—re-read the last part of the paragraph on page 129. Think about it…see if you can paraphrase what he’s saying.

Pg152-166—Pick two quotes from Goldberg’s philosophy that you either strongly agree or disagree with (i.e. one of the quotes about weapons, science, languages). Write them down (so you can refer to it in class) and explain your feelings.
