GROUP 2 - GLOBALISATION • Erosion of labour rights: Trade agreements that do not recognise labour rights e.g. EPZs • Unfair competition undermining local industry (market dominance) leading to closure & unemployment (Job insecurity) and declining TU strength • Capital flight transfers jobs & growth elsewhere • Informalisation of work, shrinking of formal sector • Pressure on labour laws to make labour market flexible attractive to FDI • Jobless growth due to capital-intensive production, focussed on extractive industries (mono-economy, enclave economics): Does not spread the benefits of growth widely (causes socio-economic inequalities). Challenges of globalisation to TUs

Opportunities of globalisation • Increased use of knowledge to counter neoliberal globalisation • ICT connectivity: Enhanced solidarity and networking • Growth of service industry and job opportunities as potential TU growth area e.g. telecommunication sector (call centres, mobile phone cards) • Wake-up call to TUs. Global union movement in response to collective threat of globalisation. Increased awareness, debates and organising against global processes. • Increased competition brings opportunity for comparative analysis in wage bargaining vis-a-vis dominance environment.

Priorities for TU research on globalisation • Impact of FDI on employment and working conditions • Free Trade Vs Trade Regulation: Benefit-cost analysis of country experiences • Impact of EPAs on employment and sustainable development • Changes in the nature of jobs for women and vulnerable groups (adjustment of different populations groups to changing work conditions) • Impact of MNCs on the decline of TU strength (membership & industry density) • TU response to globalisation: strategies and organisational renewal of TUs.
