  1. PAWS Technology Update

  2. Browser • Opera • Kiosk Browser • Locks students out of the background tasks • Enforces test security We are still awaiting notification of the completion of the new browser, should be soon.

  3. System Requirements • PC • Widows 98se • Pentium II class system with 64 MB of RAM and at least 50 MB of free disk space • Macintosh • OS X Jaguar (10.2) or higher on an Intel- or PowerPC-based system • Harcourt has successfully run the kiosk on version 10.1

  4. Installation • Download the browser from the Wamnet download site • Harcourt is currently negotiating a contract with Opera • Completed as of this week (10/17/06) • Run the installer

  5. Testing the Install • Launch the browser • When the browser opens, you will first see a screen that identifies Opera ™ as the secure browser. • This screen will then advance to the home page. • On test day, a login screen will be presented, and you will be taken to the appropriate URL.

  6. Network Topologies • Switched environment • NO HUBS • Wireless Clients • Use wireless guidelines • “One IEEE 802.11 WAP can typically communicate with 30 client systems located within a radius of 100 m.” Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_access_point • Our recommendation would be to stay with 20 or less clients per access point.

  7. Filtering • Create an exception rule so that 207.24.42.43doesn’t get filtered at all. • On Iprism, go to the Configuration applet/Access Section/Filter Exceptions tab and define IP address for the server as both the IP Start and IP End in the destination fields and select the "No Filter" option at the bottom. • Leave the source IP start and end as default.  • This will allow any outbound traffic to that IP address to go with no filtering or monitoring.

  8. Technical Issue Escalation • WDE Contact Info • Billie Vanlandingham • 1-866-WEdGate • 1-866-933-4283 • Harcourt Customer Support Center • 1-800-763-2306 • WEN/Network Problems • Email/Call Peter or Matt • Escalate to MAI
