  2. Miami Indians • Miami people lived from the 1700s up to 1818 • They lived in Pickawillany, Maumee valley, and by the Miami river

  3. Miami Shelter • The Miami Indians lived in longhouses and wigwams that could hold 7 people • They lived near the Great Lakes • They slept on fur blankets on the ground • The Miami people stayed at one campsite for at least 8 months

  4. Miami Tools and Food • The Miami Indians ate corn, fish, deer, bear, buffalo, small fruits, vegetables, berries, and roots • They hunted with bows and arrows, tomahawks, spears, and shields of buffalo hides

  5. Miami Clothing and Language • Men wore few pieces of clothing at war and usually had tattoos • Woman wore shawls, bonnets, and leggings • Both genders wore moccasins • The language they spoke was Algonquian

  6. Miami Battles • They fought in the battles The American Revolution, Harmar’s defeat in 1790, St. Clair’s Defeat in 1791, Dunmore’s War in 1774, and The Battle of the Fallen Timbers in which they were defeated in 1794

  7. Miami Chiefs • The most famous Miami chief’s name was Little Turtle or in Algonquin Michikinikwa • Pacanne was the Miami Indian’s 18th century chief • Francis La Fontaine was another Miami chief

  8. Miami Artwork and Religion • The Miami artwork was quillwork, beadwork, orembroidery • The Miami were Animistic which means they believe that all living creatures or natural beings have spirits • The spirits were powerful and demanded proper behavior from the Indians

  9. Places Named After the Miami • Great Miami River, Miami valley, Fort Miami, Little Miami River, Miami county, and Miami University are all located in Ohio • Miami county is also located in Indiana and Kansas • Fort Miami is also in Michigan and Indiana

  10. Other Interesting Facts • They originally lived in Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan • They are related to the Delaware, Ottawa, and Shawnee • Miami means “downstream people” • Some Miami Indians still live today • Miami Indians ate their prisoners
