  1. Aerobic Respiration Beyond Glycolysis Page 174-177

  2. 1 Glucose + 2 ADP + 2 Pi + 2 NAD+ 2 pyruvate + 2 ATP + 2 NADH +2 H+ • All happens in the cytoplasm • Next step is to get the pyruvate into the mitochondria Glycolysis review

  3. Mitochondria has two membranes • Pyruvate passively diffuses through the outer • Undergoes facilitated diffusion to go through inner • Once inside the mitochondrial matrix, pyruvate is acted upon by thepyruvate dehydrogenase complex • Complex catalyzes 3 reactions Pyruvate Oxidation

  4. Reaction 1: • Decarboxylation • A carbon is removed Pyruvate Oxidation

  5. Reaction 2: • Dehydrogenation • 2 electrons and a proton are transferred to NAD+ Pyruvate Oxidation

  6. Reaction 3: • RXN with CoA • Coenzyme A is added forming acetyl-CoA Pyruvate Oxidation

  7. A derivative of ATP • All organisms sequenced to date encode enzymes for the synthesis of CoA • Also involved in synthesis and oxidation of fatty acids Coenzyme A

  8. Pyruvate oxidation

  9. 2 pyruvate + 2 NAD+ + 2 CoA  2 acetyl-CoA + 2 NADH + 2 H+ + 2 CO2 Pyruvate oxidation

  10. Krebs cycle (citric acid cycle)
