  2. 1.The Reality PrincipleThe reality principleRefer to the substance of a sentence, the idea being talked about. • A conversation happened in front of the Beijing Wangwujin Department store ——How far is it from the railway station? ——Not too far away. You go about 100 meters southward, take the No.78 bus, and get off at the railway station. People rely on this principle to solve ambiguities in the processing of sentences.

  3. 2. The Cooperative Principle The cooperative principle refers to the way in which ideas are expressed. The listener interpret the meaning of a sentence in the belief that the speaker is trying to tell the truth, give appropriate information and avoid ambiguity.

  5. Maxims of quality (质的准则)In a conversation, (1) Do not say what you believe to be false(2) Do not say that fo which you lack of confidence. Examples • I have a well-paid job, and cannot afford to buy my bread.

  6. 观音：诸多借口，你根本不想去取西经，不管怎么解释，也不能原谅你欺师灭祖的行为！唐僧：姐姐，这是你的不对了！观音：啊？唐僧：悟空他要吃我，只不过是一个构思，还没有成为事实，你又没有证据，他又何罪之有呢？不如等他吃了我之后，你有凭有据，再定他的罪也不迟啊！观音：诸多借口，你根本不想去取西经，不管怎么解释，也不能原谅你欺师灭祖的行为！唐僧：姐姐，这是你的不对了！观音：啊？唐僧：悟空他要吃我，只不过是一个构思，还没有成为事实，你又没有证据，他又何罪之有呢？不如等他吃了我之后，你有凭有据，再定他的罪也不迟啊！

  7. b. Maxims of Quantity（量的准则）To give information as much as possible. Do not make the conversation over informative or less. ——Where has Xiao Wang gone? ——He dressed in jeans and T-shirt, and have gone to visit his father in law. ——Where does C live? ——Somewhere in the south of France.

  9. c. Maxims of Relevance（相关准则） Make your contribution relevant to the aims of the ongoing conversation. ——How far is it from the department store? ——What？To Guangzhou? It is far away! • Pass me that salt!(sodium chloride, not any other kind of mineral)

  11. d. Maxim of Manner（方式准则）Try to avoid obscurity, ambiguity, wordiness, and disorderliness in the use of language. • 你们班长呢？ • 哎，别提啦！上调啦！ • 可惜啊！年纪这么轻！ • 不是啊，升官啦！
