Microsoft Licensing Channels • Microsoft have several different licensing channels which each serve different types of customer (System Builder, Volume Licensing, Enterprise Agreement…..) • Many products are sold through more than one channel • Each channel has its own unique set of rules, restrictions, and benefits, and is designed to meet the needs of different types of customer • Selecting the appropriate channel for your needs depends upon many factors • IT IS COMPLICATED  • Arrow and the Microsoft Windows Embedded Business are here to support OEMs who wish to use Microsoft technology in their specialised devices • That includes giving you access to Microsoft experts who have the big picture and can give impartial advice about which channel meets your needs

5. But what is a Windows Embedded device? • The key question: how does an end-user see your final product ? • The embedded user sees a device and the desktop OS user sees a computer.

For example we continue to supply runtimes for Server 2003, XP Pro, NT 4.0, MS-DOS 6.22, Windows CE 2.12, and many other products which are no longer available elsewhere. The Windows Embedded channel is the only option for many legacy products

Products built on Windows Embedded can be tailored to the exact needs of the application and be presented by the Embedded OEM as complete solutions, not general purpose computers.

For those which do, an Embedded OEM has the opportunity to apply for OEM Activation, removing the need for per device activation during your production process. The media can contain not only the OS, but also the OEM application, and can even be branded by the OEM to increase the perceived value of the solution.

OEMs are using this technology to save cost, enable high availability, long lifecycles, simplify development and installation. In the Windows Embedded channel, our licensing enables our OEMs to run 2 virtual instances of Windows on top of a Standard Edition Windows Server OS.

Full details here. An Embedded OEM can legally ship their products to most of the planet. This is because Microsoft realise that an Embedded device is not like a PC or general purpose Server, and your needs are different from those of a PC or Server OEM!!!!

These specialist products allow complete customisation of the OS to suit your needs, and to differentiate the OEM offering. In the Windows Embedded Server family there are also unique products including “Telco” and “Essentials” editions, and versions of SQL priced at very attractive levels compared to other channels

The “Multi User Interface” pack (MUI) solution is available for many Client and Server Windows Embedded products and gives the OEM the possibility to purchase one version of the runtime license and deploy any combination of language support.
