  1. Copernicus(1473-1543) By: Travis ramcharran

  2. Smart Guy • Renaissance ushered in technology • Copernicus took advantage • Posited that the planets revolve around the Sun • Doctorate in canon law • He knew that his findings would create shock • So, he published his findings in the last year of his life…and it did cause shock • Many theological, cultural, and social beliefs were held on the geocentric model.

  3. Gained Favor Pope Clement VII and a few cardinals were interested in Copernicus’ ideas. Even the Archbisop of Capua favored it and wrote to Copernicus: Some years ago word reached me concerning your proficiency, of which everybody constantly spoke…I began to have a very high regard for you... formulated a new cosmology…with the utmost earnestness I entreat you, most learned sir…communicate this discovery of yours to scholars…

  4. Posthumously Attacked • In 1546, three years after his death and publication, there was only mild controversy. • Movement was initiated by BartolomeoSpina of the Dominican order. • He died and his friend took over, Giovanni Tolosani • Tolosani showed that Copernicus’ theory was absurd with three points: • Movement of the Earth • Backwards thought process • Applying inferior knowledge to something that needs a superior knowledge
