  3. Resources Reviewed: • Cochrane Library – pan for the gold • PubMed – big and bountiful • NGC (National Guideline Clearinghouse) • Bandolier – for clinicians and patients • BadgerLink – your Wisconsin connection • MedlinePlus – starting point • Natl Ctr for Complementary & Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)

  4. Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is… • On the rise • 40% of American adults report using CAM* • Getting research attention • Being integrated into conventional medicine • Incorporated into managed care • Appearing in clinical curricula . *Astin JA. Why patients use alternative medicine: results of a national study. JAMA. 1998;279:1548-1554

  5. Definitions: • A group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine (according to NCCAM) • Complementary – used together with conventional medicine • Alternative – used in place of conventional medicine • Integrative – combines mainstream and CAM therapies where high-quality scientific evidence of safety and effectiveness exist

  6. Quick Review of 5 Steps of EBP • Convert need for info into focused clinical question • Track down the best evidence • Appraise the evidence • Integrate evidence into your practice • Evaluate the process Sackett, 1998
