  1. Treatment of Back Pain with Spinal Cord Simulation

  2. Around half of the adult population in the world suffers from back pain at some point in their lives. One out of ten people suffering from back pain find themselves severely disabled by the back pain and visit a back pain doctor near them. The pain signal travels via nerve pathways to the spinal cord which delivers the signal to the brain. Constant pain signals through the nerves can cause long-term pain which is difficult to treat. This is known as chronic pain. Some patients suffering from chronic pain can be managed in primary care, but a number of patients require specialized pain assessment and management. Since chronic pain is difficult to treat, a number of patients continue to experience intrusive and distressing pain even after going through a variety of treatments. Patients who are referred to a pain management clinic in Ahmedabad have usually already undergone treatments provided secondary care specialists. Spinal cord stimulation is a vital part of the treatment plan for patients suffering from neuropathic pain. It can be delivered along with other therapies such as medication and physiology based therapies. In the past, the spinal cord simulation method was considered as the last option for treating pain. But according to the spine specialist in Ahmedabad, it is now clear that this treatment is an effective, cost-efficient alternative that should be utilized at an early stage in the treatment process for specific situations such as lumbar and cervical radiculopathy, failed back surgery syndrome, ischemic pain, and complex regional pain syndrome. It should also be considered early in a patient’s pain management when the first-line therapies have failed. The simulation is provided by an implanted electrode which receives power from an implanted pulse generator (IPG). Electrodes may be inserted by an epidural needle or can also be implanted surgically. Most Spinal cord simulation devices have three main parts: • Pulse generator for generating electrical pulses. • A wire with electrodes to deliver the pulse to the spinal cord • Remote control to adjust the settings of the system. Some devices use a current of low-frequency to replace the sensation of pain with a mild tingling feeling called as paresthesia. In some cases, the devices provide burst pulses of high frequency to conceal the pain without the tingling feeling.
