  1. Wheel and Axle

  2. Wheel and Axle • A large wheel and a smaller wheel mounted on a common axis so both wheels turn at the same time • Ex. Winch, tap, door knob, steering wheel • A wheel and axle are similar to a lever • The radius of the part of the machine where the load is attached is the load arm • The radius of the part of the machine where the effort is attached is the effort arm • BLM 4-5 Examples of Wheels and Alxes

  3. Speed and force advantages • If the load is attached to the wheel there is a speed advantage • Ex. pedaling a bike • MA = Length of effort arm = 1cm = .17 Length of load arm 6 cm Load Load Arm 6 cm Wheel Axle Effort Arm 1 cm

  4. If the load is attached to the axle there is a force advantage • Ex. a doorknob MA = load arm = 6 cm = 6 effort arm 1 cm Effort Arm 1 cm Load Load Arm 6 cm

  5. If the load is connected to the wheel and a handle is attached, the length of the handle is the effort arm MA = load arm = 6 cm = 0.5 effort arm 12 cm Effort Arm 12 cm Load Load Arm 6 cm
