  2. Wheel and axle What is a wheel and axle? Answer: A wheel and axle is a simple machine made of a larger wheel that is fixed to a smaller wheel or rod called an axle.

  3. How does a wheel and axle make it easier to do work? • Answer: The wheel and axle reduces the force necessary to turn an axle. When an input force is applied to the wheel, the output force on the axle is increased. The larger the ratio of the diameter of the wheel to the diameter of the axle, the less force you need to turn the axle. Although the wheel increases the output force on the axle, you must apply the force over a longer distance. In doing this, the amount of work inputted into the system is the same as the work outputted.

  4. Wheel and axle • How can a wheel and axle be used in a system? • Answer: A wheel and axle can be used to increase the turning force in a system. For example, doorknob uses a wheel and axle to pull a latch that slides out of a hole in the door frame, allowing the door to swing freely. The handle of the doorknob is the wheel. It increases the amount of force on the axle, so you can apply less force to the doorknob and still pull the latch.
