  2. Rotation and Revolution of the Earth The Earth moves in two different ways: The Earth revolves around the Sun once every 365 ¼ days. • The Earth rotates on its axis once every 24 hours.

  3. Cycle of Day and Night The rotation of the Earth on its axis causes the cycle of day and night to occur. The Sun rises in the east and sets in the west. The speed of rotation is approximately 1700 km/hr at the equator. Since the Earth is round and opaque, half of the Earth is illuminated at any time. Therefore, when it is daytime here, it will be nighttime in Australia.
