What is an EMS? • Segment of an organization's overall management structure that addresses the immediate and long-term impact of its products, services and processes on the environment. • A system that provides order and consistency to address environmental concerns by allocating resources, assigning responsibilities & evaluating the effectiveness of procedures, practices and processes.

Characteristics of an EMS • Defines an organization’s environmental mission & determines the methods needed to accomplish these goals. • Ongoing, continuously developing. • Interactive process, all facts of the organization • ( operations, quality, finance, occupational health and safety). • Defines, documents and continually improves required capabilities.
