  1. TDG 2103 TRANSPORT OF DANGEROUS GOODS BY AIR LECTURE 2 AMC - TDG 2103 BY SIR ARIFF

  2. LECTURE 2 • REVIEW ON LECTURE 1 • LIMITATION AND EXCLUSIONS • CLASSIFICATION OF DANGEROUS GOODS AMC - TDG 2103 BY SIR ARIFF

  3. To transport dangerous goods, we must know how airfreight industry operates. WHAT IS FREIGHT? WHAT IS AIRFREIGHT? AMC - TDG 2103 BY SIR ARIFF

  4. Freight means Goods or Objects or Materials for transportation. • Airfreight refer to any GOODS or OBJECTS or ANY MATERIALS that will be transported through air. • What are the vehicles used to transport goods? • Aircrafts / Airplanes • Helicopter AMC - TDG 2103 BY SIR ARIFF

  5. TYPE OF AIRCRAFT Passenger Aircrafts Cargo Aircraft AMC - TDG 2103 BY SIR ARIFF

  6. HOW DANGEROUS GOODS BEING CARRIED ON AIRCRAFT? In Cargo • Demand • Import & Export By Passenger or air crew As part of the airworthiness or operating equipment • Alcohol beverages • Medicine • Aerosols • Lighter • Safety Matches • Life raft • Fire extinguisher • Batteries AMC - TDG 2103 BY SIR ARIFF

  7. LIMITATIONS & EXCLUSIONS • Since this dangerous goods can cause harm to people, there are outlines, requirements and regulations to be followed in order to transport dangerous goods. • Outlines, requirements and regulations have been discussed by ICAO in Annex 18. Annex 18 Technical Instruction for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air. AMC - TDG 2103 BY SIR ARIFF

  8. To follow this guidelines, to know the requirement and regulation of this TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION, youmust know: • Definition of Dangerous Goods. • Basic understanding why it is dangerous. AMC - TDG 2103 BY SIR ARIFF

  9. Dangerous Goods = Danger + Goods IN SIMPLE WORD Hazard Materials @ Risk objects that can causes harm! Example: Radioactive, flammable gas, poison, fuel and etc. Mohd 'Ariff - AMC Notes

  10. Why it is important to learn about dangerous goods?? Because . . . . . . • IT CAN START A FIRE • IT CAN HELP SPREADING A FIRE • CAN CAUSE INJURY THROUGH CONTACT AND RADIATION • IT CAN RELEASE TOXIC VAPOUR ON ITS OWN OR COMING IN • CONTACT WITH OTHER SUBSTANCES WHICH CAN AFFECT • CREW PHYSICALLY AND PSYCHOACTIVELY. • IT CAN REACT WITH AIRCRAFT MATERIAL AMC - TDG 2103 BY SIR ARIFF

  11. Definition of Dangerous Goods Classification Packaging, Marking and Labeling Documentation, Acceptance for air transport Handling and Stowage Procedures and Emergency Respond AMC - TDG 2103 BY SIR ARIFF

  12. DANGEROUS GOODS CLASSES • Class 1 - Explosives • Class 2 - Gases • Class 3 - Flammable liquids • Class 4 - Flammable solids and reactive substance • Class 5 - Oxidizers and Organic peroxides • Class 6 - Toxic and Infectious substances • Class 7 - Radioactive material • Class 8 - Corrosive articles and substances • Class 9 - Miscellaneous articles and substances AMC - TDG 2103 BY SIR ARIFF

  13. Every classes of Dangerous Goods have different: • Characteristic • Examples of things • Why it is considered as Dangerous Goods AND Once you learn this, you will know that every class of Dangerous Goods may have different way of: • Packaging, Marking & Labeling • Documentation and Acceptance for Air Transport • Handling and Stowage. AMC - TDG 2103 BY SIR ARIFF

  14. Class 1 - Explosives • A solid or liquid substance( or a mixture) • Itself capable by chemical reaction of producing gas at a temperature and pressure and at such a speed as to cause damage to the surrounding • Example: TNT, Dynamite, Nitroglycerine and etc. AMC - TDG 2103 BY SIR ARIFF

  15. Sub-class of Class 1 • 1.1 — Explosives with a mass explosion hazard. • 1.2 — Explosives with a blast/projection hazard. • 1.3 — Explosives with a minor blast hazard. (rocket propellant, display fireworks) • 1.4 — Explosives with a major fire hazard. (consumer firework, ammunition) • 1.5 — Blasting agents. • 1.6 — Extremely insensitive explosives. AMC - TDG 2103 BY SIR ARIFF

  16. Class 2 - Gases • Gases which are compressed, liquefied or dissolved under pressure as detailed below. • Is completely gaseous at 200c at a standard pressure of 101.3 kpa. • A gas is a substance which at 500 c has a vapour pressure greater than 300 kpa. • Some gases have subsidiary risk classes; poisonous or corrosive. AMC - TDG 2103 BY SIR ARIFF

  17. Sub-class of Class 2 • 2.1 Flammable Gas: Gases which ignite on contact with an ignition source, such as acetylene and hydrogen. • 2.2 Non-Flammable Gases: Gases which are neither flammable nor poisonous. Includes the cryogenic gases/liquids (temperatures of below -100°C) used for cryopreservation and rocket fuels, such as nitrogen and neon. • 2.3 Poisonous Gases: Gases liable to cause death or serious injury to human health if inhaled; examples are fluorine, chlorine, and hydrogen cyanide.
