  1. Principles of Homotoxicologyand How it Relates to theAutistic Spectrum Disorder Mary Coyle, D.I.Hom Realchildcenter.com wellnessny@aol.com Tel: 212-255-4490

  2. Potential Contributors Genetics Autism Biological Triggers Environmental Toxicity” Heavy Metals/Pesticides Chemicals/Air Pollution Pharmaceutical Interventions

  3. Toxins Studies have confirmed at least 250 chemical contaminants are tucked away in the body fat of every person on the planet

  4. Toxic Exposures and Autism An analysis of preconception histories of 20 parents exposed to high amounts of chemicals showed that the significant difference in the parents of children versus the control group was their exposure to chemicals. Biology of the Autistic Syndrome

  5. TOXINS/HOMOTOXINS What are Homotoxins? Homotoxins are substances toxic to humans. Homotoxins reduce the conductivity of the biological terrain.

  6. What Might Happen If Too Much Garbage Goes IN to the Body, and Not Enough Goes OUT • Oxidative Stress • Reduction of Glutathione • Mitochondrial Dysfunction • Impaired Methylation System • Gastrointestinal Issues • Impaired Fuel Metabolism • Inflammation

  7. First Steps to Increase Energetic Vitality • Drink plenty of fresh, clean water • Ionized minerals • High-quality supplements • Tissue Salts • Reduce EMF stress; especially while sleeping • Balance pH • Remove offending food • Consume living food/high-quality organic food • (foods that do not promote inflammation) • Relax and spend (self-limiting) time in the sun

  8. Immunology and Illness Disorders of the immune system may occur for the following reasons: Pathogens and/or xenobiotics invade the immune system at such a pace that the body is unable to recover. Disordered immune response to antigens, such as allergies (imbalance of the Th1/Th2) Inherited or acquired immune deficiencies occur Disordered immune response to self – as seen in autoimmune diseases

  9. Phenol Sulfur -Transferase(PST) Enzyme Weakness • Low Sulfation leads to poor detoxification of Phenols. • PST Enzymes assist in the removal of phenolicsubstances from the body • Common PhenolicSubstances • Hormones • Salicylates (raspberries, apples, strawberries) • Biologic Agents (yeast) can produce phenols • Pesticides, Herbicides, Perfumes • Neurotransmitters such as Seratonin and Dopamine • The reduction of optimal sulfation may show as fatigue, hyper-activity, self-stimulatory behaviors, red cheeks, red ears.

  10. “Saliva, pupil size difference in autism show system in overdrive” • “University of Kansas researchers have found larger resting pupil size and lower levels of a salivary enzyme associated with the neurotransmitter norepinephrine in Children with autism spectrum disorder” • University of Kansas, Lawrence Campus, July 12, 2012

  11. Our symbiotic relationship with microbes A healthy person maintains a symbiotic relationship with its internal microbial environment. A weak and compromised person is unable to effectively manage his/ her own endogenous microbial load- which enables the internal biological milieu to become more opportunistic.

  12. Hans Seyle • Flight or Fight Response • First Phase: Adaptation • Second Phase: Alarm • Third Phase: Exhaustion

  13. ASD and Mitochondria Disorders • Mitochondria are organelles that function as the power house of the cell. These energy packs reside in every cell of the body, except the red blood cells, and generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP) . • Recent studies have challenged the “classical” definition of mitochondrial dysfunction. They suggest that a subset of ASD children may have a secondary form or mitochondrial dysfunction - with may be related to toxic exposures. Rossignol DA, Bradstreet J. Evidence of mitochondrial dysfunction in autism and implications for treatment. Am J Biochem Biotech. 2008; 4(2): 208-17.

  14. Homotoxicology is a system designed to ENABLE the Body to REACT The Question is: How does your child react to stress?

  15. ASD and Cerebral Energy Metabolism • Research has shown that impaired cerebral energy and phospholipid metabolism corresponds with neuropsychological and language deficits frequently observed in the autistic population. Minshew NL et al. A preliminary P MRS study of autism: Evidence of undersynthesis and increased degradation of brain membranes. Biological Psychiatry 1993;33: 762 -73

  16. What is Homeopathy? Homeopathy is based on the concept Similiasimilibuscurentur ('Let like be cured by like')

  17. Beginning the Journey of Homotoxicology • The Model: Dr. Reckeweg theorized that all diseases may be categorized under three processes. • Excretion of the toxin: Such as diarrhea, skin eruptions, mucous, fever, cough • Deposition (deposits) of the toxins: Such as warts, hemorrhoids, cysts • Degeneration through the actions of the toxins: Such as autism, diabetes, MS, lupus, cancer

  18. Biologists Ludwig Von Bertalanffy At the turn of the century, biologist Ludwig Von Bertalanffy, described every living system (man, bird, slug) as systems of flowing elements, designed to gain and maintain balance.

  19. Biotherapies • Foundational remedies: water, air, light, magnetism, down-time, sleep • Biochemical remedies: food, botanicals, enzymes, vitamins, minerals • Structural Remedies: massage, colonics, body work, Cranial-Sacral, castor oil packs, hydrotherapy • Energetic: Homeopathy, acupuncture, flower remedies, Reiki, drainage remedies tissue salts, oligotherapy • Mental and Spiritual Work

  20. The Emunctories • Primary Emunctories • Lungs, Kidneys, Digestion Tract/Liver, Skin, Emotions Secondary Emunctories • Skin, Musculo-skeletonal, Mucous Membranes, Emotional Changes

  21. DRAINAGE The physiological action that supports the body to remove toxins, without aggression, or pushing it to eliminate beyond its physiologic ability. This allows for self-regulation.

  22. Drainage Remedies Oligotherapy: The use of small concentrations of minerals which serve to activate enzymes. Gemmotherapy: The embryological tissue of plants which can be used to support and drain a gland or tissue Organotherapy: Dynamized and diluted organ tissue designed to stimulate the corresponding organ tissue Tissue Salts: Restores the proper balance of tissue salts (12) in the body. Flower Essences: Diluted extracts of flowers or plants designed to address emotional and mental issues

  23. 5 Phases of Draining Toxic Build-up • 1: Opening Eliminative Pathways • 2: Address Liver blockages • 3: Address Kidney and Respiratory Blockages • 4: Clean-up metabolic Waste • 5: Address further primary and secondary emunctories

  24. Homeopathic Formulations as Physiological Regulatory Agents These formulations are designed to restore physiology through providing communication molecules such as hormones, neuropeptides, interleukins and growth factors better efficiency.

  25. The Efficacy of Using Serial Agitated Dilutions • The effectiveness of homeopathic preparations was further substantiated by a meta-analysis of 105 published studies reviewing the efficacy of serial agitated dilutions (SAD). The study concluded that 80% of the outcomes meeting the criteria for meta-analysis were positive. • Jonas W et al. Critical review and meta-analysis of serial agitated dilutions in experimental toxicology. Hum Exp Toxicol. 1994 Jul;13(7):481-92

  26. Potentized Low-Doses of a Cytokine Solution and Allergic Asthma An oral administration of potentized low doses of cytokine solutions not only resolved the bronchial hyper-reactive response of the mice, but normalized the cytokine levels. The study stated, “These findings may suggest a novel approach to diseases that involve a Th1/Th2 imbalance.” Gariboldi S et al. Low dose oral administration of cytokines for treatment of allergic asthma. PulmPharmacolTher, 2009 Dec;22(6): 497-510

  27. Homeopathic Cellular Supports Bio-energetic cellular support products supply the body the energy it needs, without requiring additional reserves for break-down and assimilation; which are necessary when functioning on the bio-chemical level (digestion of food, supplements, etc.). They are designed to stimulate the production of energy (ATP), and promote cellular regeneration. If the body is equipped with the energy it needs to begin functioning properly, it will naturally start by “cleaning house” and mobilizing the toxins towards excretion.

  28. Low-Potency Homeopathic Detoxification It is a process of recognizing, neutralizing, and removing toxic compounds. The goal is be both dynamic and reactive to facilitate homeostasis.

  29. EnzymTes and Enzymatco-factors “Enzymes are the most important unit in the human body, because every chemical change that takes place to repair tissue or to assimilate food involves the activity of enzymes. Without enzyme activity there is no life. No plant or animal can live without the activity of its enzymes.” Dr Royal Lee

  30. Epigenetics(you’re not necessarily stuck with this…) Epigenetics means “above the gene.” Environmental factors such as stress, diet, and toxins may alter gene(s), but may not have caused a permanent mutation to the gene(s).

  31. Epigenetics and the Agouti Mice • These mice have a genetic defect in their agouti gene which codes the signaling molecule to produce a yellow coat, obesity, hyperinsulinemia and the susceptibility to cancer. Feeding the females a methyl-supplemented diet produced a greater number of normal offspring. • FASAB j. 1998 Aug:12 (11): 949-57.

  32. DNA Repair EnzymeMechanisms • Termed “Molecule of the Year” these enzymes scan our DNA and repair nucleotides which may have been incorrectly sequenced due exposures for either pathogens or xenobiotics

  33. Cellular Supports and DNA Repair Enzymes • “Like doctors making house calls, some DNA repair enzymes can relocate to the part of the cell that needs their help. A collaborative team of scientists of Emory University School of Medicine has found the signal that prompts relocation is oxidative stress, an imbalance of cellular metabolism connected with several human disease.” Molecular and Cellular Biology, Feb 1, 2009 issue “DNA Repair Enzymes Relocate in Response to Stress,” Vincent Dollard.

  34. The Neuroplasticity of the Brain This study involved mice with a genetically induced neurodegenerative disease that progressed into significant brain atrophy and neuronal loss. The mice presented with long-term memory loss and severe learning impairment. When exposed to an enriched environment, they began developing neuronal dendrites, increasing the number of synapses, improved learning capacity, and regained long-term memory loss. Nature. 2007 May 447:178-82

  35. Bringing Hope… • “Their genome they inherit - But their epigenome, they potentially can alter, and particularly that of their children. And that brings in responsibility, but it also brings in hope. You're not necessarily stuck with this. You can alter this.” • DR. RANDY JIRTLE • “Ghost in Your Genes” NOVA
