  1. Matthew 7:24-25 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.  Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.

  2. What we believe about Baptism in the Holy Spirit

  3. Baptism in the Holy Spirit The Promise The Purpose The Practice

  4. The Promise

  5. Isaiah 44:3 For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.

  6. Joel 2:28-29 “Then, after doing all those things, I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions. In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on servants—men and women alike.

  7. Matthew 3:11 I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

  8. John the Baptist Jesus is the one who baptises The promise is wide-embracing We can be completely immersed in the Holy Spirit

  9. John 7:37-39 On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!  Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’”

  10. Isaiah 58:11 The Lord will guide you continually,    giving you water when you are dry    and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden,    like an ever-flowing spring.

  11. John 7:37-39 On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!  Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’” (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)

  12. Luke 24:49 And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.

  13. Acts 1:4-5 Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

  14. The Purpose

  15. Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

  16. Acts 4:7-13 They brought in the two disciples and demanded, “By what power, or in whose name, have you done this?” Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of our people, are we being questioned today because we’ve done a good deed for a crippled man? Do you want to know how he was healed? Let me clearly state to all of you and to all the people of Israel that he was healed by the powerful name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, the man you crucified but whom God raised from the dead.

  17. Acts 4:7-13 For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, ‘The stone that you builders rejected    has now become the cornerstone.’ There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.” The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recog-nizedthem as men who had been with Jesus.

  18. Baptism in the Holy Spirit • Helps us to understand God’s Word • (1 Corinthians 2:11, John 14:26) • Helps us to pray • (Jude 20, Romans 8:26-27) • Helps our faith • (1 Corinthians 12:9) • Helps give us victory over sin • (1 Peter 1:2)

  19. The Practice

  20. Acts 19:1-2 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions until he reached Ephesus, on the coast, where he found several believers. “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them. “No,” they replied, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

  21. The Gift of Tongues • The usual, initial evidence of baptism in the Holy Spirit

  22. The Gift of Tongues • The usual, initial evidence of baptism in the Holy Spirit • Not expected to be understood

  23. 1 Corinthians 14:2 For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious.

  24. The Gift of Tongues • The usual, initial evidence of baptism in the Holy Spirit • Not expected to be understood • For the edification and strengthening of the believer

  25. 1 Corinthians 14:4a A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally...

  26. Other Evidence • The Gifts of the Spirit in operation • The Fruit of the Spirit

  27. Galatians 5:22-23 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

  28. How do we receive it? • Be submitted to Jesus Christ (the baptiser), ie. to be born again. • Have a Deep Desire • Receive by Faith

  29. Luke 11:9-13 And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. “You fathers—if your children ask for a fish, do you give them a snake instead? Or if they ask for an egg, do you give them a scorpion? Of course not!

  30. Luke 11:9-13 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.”
