  4. Graphs • Helps you reconstruct the table • Shows obvious patterns so that you can draw a line through data points to make estimations • Provides information about relationship of x and y axis

  5. Making Data Easier to Understand • Equations- unlike mathematicians who use equations to describe relationships between variables, physicist use the tools to describe measured or predicted relationships etween physical quantities. • Most do not contain #’s, but use letters to describe specific quantities.

  6. Symbols in Physics • ∑ (sigma) = sum or total • ∆ = change • ∆x = change in x axis • ∆y = change in y axis • ∆t = time interval • Take a look at Appendix A as a class…write down 3 more that you think we will use often in Physics

Order-of-magnitude estimations check answers • Because numbers may be so large or small, it is useful to estimate an answer to a problem before trying to solve it. • Determine the power of 10 that is closest to the actual numerical value of the quantity, and then you can judge whether the answer you get from the more exact procedure is correct.

  10. Order-of-magnitude estimations check answers • Ex. To find the time of a car trip, take the distance divided by the speed. • The distance is 725km (round to 103 or 1000km because it is closer than 102) • The speed of the car is 88km/h (round that to 102 or 100km/h) • 103 = 10 h 102
