  1. Part 1 How to Approach the Eucharist

  2. Eucharist The Eucharist is the center of our Orthodox worship and the center of our Life

  3. Grafted in Him “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” John 6:56 • I become a part of Him, a branch of His, and I am transformed to be a part of Him

  4. “For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner[a] eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s[b] body.” 1 Corinthians 11:29

  5. Preparation • Fasting St. Ambrose of Milan said, “The mystic feast is prepared for by fasting… It is bought at the price of hunger and the cup of sober intoxication is gained by thirst for heavenly sacraments.”

  6. Preparation • Self- examination “Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood[a] of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.” 1 Corinthians 11:27-28

  7. Participation • We participate in reconciling the heavenly with the earthly through praise • Silent prayer on behalf of all of creation

  8. “Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the flesh—who are called Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by hands— 12 that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

  9. 14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, 15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, 16and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. 17 And He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near.” Ephesians 2:11-17

  10. Participation We should let go to all that binds us to this world and set our minds on things above

  11. Partaking “We partake of the Light of the World to go become the light of the World”

  12. The Spirit in which we approach Christ • Fear • Faith • Love

  13. Fear • Awe and reverence - “I desire Your Holiness to be united with my sinful body”

  14. Faith • Believe in the power of God offering Himself to heal our infirmities

  15. Love • Offer Yourself to the One who offered Himself first

  16. Protect The most valuable gift bestowed to mankind • With the greatest effort flee from sin, or its roots
