  1. The Eucharist • 1 – Source of our spiritual food • Prefigured in many ways in the OT – primarily “Manna” • Also the “Bread and Wine” offered my Melchizedek • New Testament: Jesus in John 6 – refers to himself as the “Bread which comes down from heaven.”

  2. The Eucharist is both the cause and sign of the Unity of the Church. • It causes first our union with Christ, and through Him our union with one another. • See: 1 Cor. 10:17 • It is this union with Christ and His body that is signified by the words Holy Communion.

  3. Analogy: Just as many grains of wheat make up the one loaf of bread, and many grapes produce the one cup of wine, so too many Christians are joined into the one Body of Christ through the Eucharist.

Eucharist means Thanksgiving (what are we giving thanks for?) • Transubstantiation – Means “cross-over of substance” (See: CCC 1373) • Eucharist contains: “Body, Blood, Soul, Divinity” of the Crucified and Risen Lord • Ordinary Minister is the Bishop and Priest • Basic Form – Words of Consecration…..Matter: Pure Wheat Bread / Pure Grape Wine
