  26. ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION 1781 THIS WEAK DOCUMENT ATTEMPTED TO SET UP THE GOVERNMENT, BUT… No executive branch No taxing or laws enacted by Congress No national court system No national unity and an unfair representation system

  30. BEFORE 1861 (BEFORE THE WAR) NULLIFICATION CRISIS It started when southern states challenged the federal government’s authority to make laws. Because states had created the union, they had the right to declare a federal law NULL, or not valid.

WHY DID THE SOUTHERN STAES SECEDE FROM THE UNION IN 1861? • Because of new states entering the union that did not have slaves, the slaveholding states would soon be in the minority. • Growing support of abolition of slavery by northerners. • Lincoln’s election is viewed by the South as a threat to their society.

  42. 1898the Spanish American War America felt that its frontier was settled, and this caused a rise of IMPERIALISM, the move to gain territory outside the borders. We annexed Hawaii and traded with Latin America. Then, in 1898, our battleship Maine exploded in Cuba. We declared war on Spain, which controlled Cuba, and the war was over in one year. We gained territory in the Pacific Islands, Caribbean, and the Philippines.
