  1. Participial Phrases Participles end in “ing” or “ed” and describe a noun.

  2. The following participles are easier to find because they come directly before the NOUN that they describe…

  3. Participles: • The baked potato… • The swimming duck… • The burned toast… • The flying bird… • Participles that end in “ed” are called ___________ participles. • Participles that end in “ing” are called _______________ participles.

  4. Participial Phrase: A participial phrase begins with a participle and has one or more words following that are not verbs. There are NO VERBS in any kind of phrase! • Flying through the air, the bird captured the lady bug in its beak. • Baking in the oven, the potato was just about ready to eat. These participles are connected to prepositional phrases then end with commas to create the participial phrases.

  5. Many times the participle is more difficult to discover because it is part of a phrase that does not come directly before the NOUN it describes.

  6. Examples: • The tired man sat in his chair, cracked and worn with age. • Walking through the jungle, the explorer found many tracks imprinted in the soft ground.
