  1. Characterization of fly ash generated from Bakreswar Thermal Power PlantDr. ArabindaMondalDepartment of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati, Sriniketan. Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati

  2. What is Fly Ash? Fly ash is finely divided residue generated in the combustion of powdered coal and transported by the flue gases and collected by electrostatic precipitator. Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati

  3. Classification of Fly AshAccording to ASTM C-6181. Class F fly ash2. Class C fly ash Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati

  4. Fly ash – Hazards to Environment and Life Fly ash contains trace amounts of toxic metals like Th, Cr, Pb, Hg, Cd, Mn, Cu, Co, As, etc., which may have negative effect on human health and on plants. Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati

  5. Physico-chemical properties of Bakreswar fly ash • Particle size: 0.5-27.3 µm • Surface area: 75 m2/g • Specific gravity: 2.11 • pH value: 10.30 • Carbon content: 0.59 % Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati

  6. Chemical analysis of Bakreswar fly ash Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati

  7. X-ray Diffraction analysis on Bakreswar fly ash Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati

  8. Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of Bakreswar fly ash Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati

  9. Conclusion • From the compositions of fly ash sample, it can be concluded that the fly ash sample belongs to ASTM class F. • Fly ash particles are almost totally spherical in shape, allowing them to flow and blend freely in mixtures. • Pozzolanic properties of fly ash can be identified by presence/absence of calcium oxide. So class F fly ash is the weak in pozzolanic as very less amount of calcium oxide present. Dr. ArabindaMondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati

  10. Prospects of Bakreswar Fly ash Utilization 1. Production of building materials Portland fly ash cement Portland cement clinker Sintered fly ash aggregate for concrete Lime fly ash bricks Clay fly ash building bricks Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati

  11. 2. Road and air field pavement construction Fly ash in road construction Embankment Lime fly ash concrete Cement fly ash concrete Lime fly ash soil stabilization Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati

  12. 3. Filler material in the reclamation of land and in mining4. Plant nutrient5. Manufacture of paints6. Preparation of domestic cleansing powders8. Manufacture of rubber and plastics as filler Dr. ArabindaMondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati

  13. 8. Development of Fly Ash Based Polymer Composites as Wood Substitute9. Manufacture of Different ceramic wares Roof tiles (glazed/unglazed) Glazed floor and wall tiles Manufacture of Sanitaryware10. Ceramic fibers, decorative glass, contineous casting mould powders, etc. Dr. Arabinda Mondal, Assistant Professor, Department of Silpa-Sadana, PSV, Visva-Bharati
