About Mrs. Elisa Hwang-Mendez • This is my 7th year teaching (6 years in 4th grade, a year in 3rd grade). • Received Elementary Teaching Credential from California State University, Northridge in June 2007 (LAUSD) • Graduated from UCDavis in June 2005 with a Bachelors’ Degree in Sociology and Chicano/a Studies

Discipline Plan Rules • Show Respect • Make Good Decisions • Solve Problems Rewards • Classroom Economy: Bonus $ • Class Jars (Party!), Table Points, Classroom Store, Auctions Consequences (Yellow Cards) • Warning • Lose your recess • Parent Phone Call • Principal’s Office ** Citations (cheating, physical assault*)

Language Arts In 4th Grade, we focus on… (CA Standards  Common Core) • Writing • Narrative, Informational Summary, Argument • Vocabulary • multiple meanings, prefix/suffix, Greek/Latin roots • Reading Comprehension • Inferences!!!  Story structure, author’s viewpoint, compare/contrast, cause and effect, multiple-step instructions • Figurative Language, Genres

Math In 4th Grade, we focus on… • Place Value to the millions • Multiplication and Division (double+ digits) • Fractions (uncommon denominator) • Decimals (fractions = decimal) • Data and Graphs • Measurement: Perimeter and Area • Geometry: Lines, Angles, 3-D Solids & Nets • Order of Operation • Algebra

  10. How Can You Participate? • Check your child’s homework/tests everyday • Ask your child to tell you about his/her school day and what he/she learned • Make sure your child is reading at home everyday (40+ min.) • Donate art and party supplies, school supplies, and books for our classroom library. • Volunteer to help during our special events. • Chaperone our class fieldtrips.
