  6. What’s the big deal about teeth?

  7. Dental Readiness Classification • Several years ago, the Department of Defense (DOD) adopted a system that allows rapid classification of dental status based upon four categories of need • The system provides a means to track the oral health status of the military, and thus allows for targeting resources to those who need the most immediate care

  8. Dental ReadinessClassification • Class 1: Oral Health • Class 2: Conditions not expected to cause a dental emergency in the next 12 months • Class 3: Conditions expected to cause a dental emergency in the next 3 months (aka: the bad tooth club) • Class 4: unknown?

  9. Dental Readiness Classification • Class 1 and Class 2 – dentally deployable • Class 3 and Class 4 – not dentally deployable Conversion rate of DRC 4 to DRC 3 is usually 20% – 30% (depending on the state)

  10. Dental Programs/Funding What can be done for the bad tooth club? • Mobilization - 2020 funding • Readiness - 2065/NG6H funds (ASDRS) • DENCOM initiatives to increase dental readiness First Term Dental Readiness, FTDR Demobilization Dental Reset, DDR Dental Readiness Information Center, DRIC • Self pay • Tricare Dental Plan (Met Life), Active Duty Dental Plan (United Concordia)

  11. Dental Treatment Of Alerted Soldiers • Utilize 2020 funding for mobilization • Access to early eligibility for Active Duty Dental Plan (ADDP) when 180 days from mobilization • Start early, avoid last minute fixes • Continue with methods that have proven successful in the past

  12. Army SELRES Dental Readiness System(ASDRS) • Utilize 2065/NG6H funds for Dental Care of all DRC 3 & 4 Soldiers not in alert status (not for AGR or ADOS >30day Soldiers) • SM can be put on orders for up to 4 UTAs for medical readiness • RHRP and local contract for exams and treatment C

  13. BLACKBERRY BREAK!!!

  14. Implementation of Program • Query DENCLASS for DRC 3 Soldiers • Work with unit to determine who receives care • Start correcting DRC 3 conditions as soon as possible • Provide exams to DRC 4 Soldiers internally or with contracted events • Utilize 2065 funding or 2020 funding as appropriate

  15. First Term Dental Readiness (FTDR) • Goal is for 95% of all soldiers treated to DRC 2 by end of basic/AIT • No increase in training time • MEDPROS pull to determine DRC upon arrival to State • Remaining DRC 3 treatment can be fixed using 2065 funding at State

  16. Demob Dental Reset (DDR) • Dental exams for all demobilizing Soldiers & try to correct “easy” DRC 3 Soldiers • No delay of demob process • 85% reset goal • 8-12% increase in dental readiness baseline anticipated • 7-10% of returning Soldiers • “hard” DRC 3 will need treatment by State using 2065 funding

  17. Self Pay Individual fitness is a personal responsibility • Dental treatment outside of DRC 3 or DRC 4 is the responsibility of the Service Member • Encourage your soldiers to maintain his/her own level of fitness, to include their dental fitness. Strive for wellness!

  18. Tricare Dental Plan • A dental benefit plan offered to Guard and Reserve Service members through MetLife • Relatively inexpensive (less then $20.00/mo) • Fully covers examinations, routine cleanings, and needed radiographs • Low cost shares for most other needed treatment • Can be used to complete Class 2 treatment needs

  19. Update Dental Classification with DD2813

  20. Oversight • Complete documentation with DENCLASS entry • Ensure funds are not spent on DFC 2 treatment • Ensure fees charged are Usual, Customary and Reasonable (UCR) for the area • Guidelines for Dental Procedure Codes and Dental Weighted Values • State Dental Officers should review treatment plans from contractors and update classification in DENCLASS

  21. Case Managers Role in Dental Programs • Two programs Annual exams – contracted operations SRP/Mobilization – green suit operations • Support assigned unit and commanders Work w/ MedReadiness NCOs to assist Service Members to gain access to care • Support Soldiers to receive dental care Help SM develop the life skills necessary to take care of his/her teeth.

  22. Supporting Dental Readiness • Unit driven Med Readiness NCOs/Case Managers Counseling statements Specific instructions to SM and provider • State supported Utilize 2065 and 2020 funds (ADDP when eligible) Local dental offices for treatment Contracted events for exams and treatment State Dental Officer oversight
