  1. New SDS Format in Electronic Format Makes Life Easier for Everyone in the Chain https://www.icsds.com/

  2. From June 1st 2015 manufacturers, dealers and exporters of chemicals are required to comply with the new safety data sheet standard implemented by OSHA in the US. The harmonized new format has 16 sections covering various topics such as identification, hazard, composition, fire-fighting, first-aid, accidental release measures, handling, storage, personal protection, doxological and environmental information and stability of a chemical. Existing MSDS must be converged to the new format and, if need be, a new data sheet may be compiled if a chemical is differently classified.

  3. The traditional method is to supply the new SDS format along with the chemicals. Downstream handlers may include transporters, storage sections of cargo handlers, importers and their end users. Each one must have a copy and those in charge are required to inform and train workers about hazards and to take remedial measures. Product containers carry labels. Besides, printed sheets are also made available. The trouble with printed SDS is that copies tend to be misplaced, they may not be easily accessible when required and paper can be torn and it may even be thrown away. Just one copy on the production floor or handling area may not be sufficient. Transitioning the new data sheets to totally electronic data format is a much better option and makes life easier for everyone for a number of reasons.

  4. The use of tablets and smart phones is widely prevalent in industry. Supervisors and key personnel do carry tablets and workers usually are equipped with smart phones. Besides, the storage or processing area may have computer terminals distributed over the area in a networked fashion. Storing SDS in electronic format gives quick and easy access to just about anyone who wishes to find any specific information related to the product. This assumes more importance in the case of storage and logistics where transporters and their staff must handle different types of chemicals. In such cases paper records are difficult to access when needed. A personal device or a computer system can store thousands of SDS and any specific data sheet can be brought up within seconds. Workers can use their smart phones or tablets for the same purpose and remain well informed.

  5. An end user receives one copy of the new SDS. He may or may not make copies and distribute to all workers and workers may or may not preserve printed sheets. However, when data resides in terminals and portable devices it can always be referred to as and when anyone in the chain requires information. For example, a chemical may be spilled or there may be a small fire or a worker may come in contact with the chemical. In all such instances easy and quick access to electronic data can make a meaningful difference to response quality. • It is for organizations to decide whether data should be stored in the cloud and made available through the internet or whether they should store data in a central server and make it available over Wi-Fi to the terminals and portable devices in use. Regardless, electronic SDS does make life better for users in all situations.
