  3. Casting Spells • In the Harry Potter books most spells are cast using Latin words • The Latin words tell us what the spell does • English spells: riddikulus, bombarda • What do these spells mean?

  4. Accio • Causes an object to fly to the caster, even over quite some distance • It comes from the Latin word accio, accire, which means to send for or to fetch • How would you translate it?

  5. Sectumsempra • Cuts the person your are aiming at • From seco, secare, secavi, secatus: to cut and the Latin word semper • What does semper mean?

  6. Confundus • Causes confusion • Comes from the verb confundo, confundere, confudi: to throw into disorder

  7. Lumos • Causes a small beam of light to shiner from the castor’s wand • Comes from the Latin noun lumen, luminis: light

  8. Incendio • Starts a fire • Comes from the Latin verb incendo, incendere: to set fire to

  9. Nox • Extinguishes the light from the lumos spell • It is from the Latin noun nox, noctis: night

  10. Finite Incantatem • Finite is a imperative (command) from the verb finio, finire, finivi: to end • Incantatem from the noun incantatio, incantationis is the accusative form of charm • It stops whatever spell is being cast

  11. Avada Kevadra • The killing curse • This phrase is not Latin but Aramaic: "adhadda kedhabhra" 
 • Aramaic avada kedavra • The Phoenician alphabet (a-bra-ca-dabra)

  12. Apparation • A nonverbal spell from appareo, apparere, apparui: to appear • It is used to disappear from once place to someplace else almost instantly

  13. Cave Inimicum • Defensive spell to keep enemies away • Cave comes from caveo, cavere, cavi: to beware of • Inimicum comes from the noun inimicus, inimici: enemy • Cave canem?

  14. Mobilicorpus • From mobilis which is an adjective meaning movable and corpus, corpi • It is a spell that moves an unconscious person

  15. Crucio • A unforgivable, illegal curse that causes the victim to experience horrible pain • It is from the Latin word crucio, cruciare, cruciavi- to torment or cause anguish

  16. Expecto Patronum • From expecto, expectare, expextavi- to expect or look for + patronus, patroni: patron/protector • This spell conjures a Patronus

  17. Imperio • One of the unforgivable curses that causes the victim to be under the complete control of the castor • It is from the Latin verb impero, imperare, imperavi which means to order or command

  18. Expelliarmus • From the Latin verb expello, expellere, expuli: to drive out + arma the Latin noun that means weapon • Causes the opponent’s weapon to fly out of his or her hand

  19. Obliviate • Erases a person’s memory • Comes from the verb obliviscor, oblivisci: to forget

  20. Morsmordre • This spell causes the ‘dark mark’ to be cast in the sky • It is from the Latin nouns mors which means death + mordeo, mordere, momordi: to bite

  21. Wingardium Leviosa • This spell causes an object to levitate • It comes from the English noun for wing + arduus the Latin adjective for high/steep + levo, levare, levavi: to lift/hold up

  22. Reparo • This spell causes an object to be repaired • It comes from reparo, reparare, reparavi: to prepare again, renew, revive • oculus reparo is the spell in the picture • occulus is from occulus, occuli: eye
