Lords and Serfs • Lords’ duty – • to protect serfs • provide safety needed to grow crops • Serfs - • worked long hours & did services for the lord. • had 3 days working for the lord • days to grow food for themselves • had to give a portion of what they grew to the lord • Paid lord to use the village mill, bread oven, and winepress • not easy for serfs to gain freedom • One way was to run away for more than a year At the end of the middle ages, serfs were allowed to buy their release

Manorial Life • Land granted to a vassal is called a fief • Manors are lands on the fiefs • Lords ruled and peasants worked the land • Some paid fees to the lord/noble for the right to farm land – they had rights to move when and where they wanted • Some peasants were serfs – not able to leave land, marry, own property, and to be tried in the lord’s court • Some were servants taking care of nobles children teaching them courtesy, protocol and made/forged bonds between families.
