HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT THAN A TRADITIONAL MATH CLASS? • INCREASED PROBLEM SOLVING IN A STUDENT CENTERED CLASSROOM • OPEN-ENDED INVESTIGATIONS IN PROBLEM CENTERED UNITS • INTERDISCIPLINARY UNITS FOCUSED ON DEVELOPING UNDERSTANDING • COMMUNICATION OF REASONING AND IDEAS THROUGH WRITING AND ORAL PRESENTATIONS

  5. WHO WILL BE INVOLVED? • STUDENTS • TEACHERS • ADMINISTRATORS • PARENTS

  6. STUDENTS WE ARE IMPLEMENTING A COMBINATION OF ALGEBRA I AND IMP I FOR ALL STUDENTS ENROLLED IN AN ALGEBRA I COURSE FOR THE 2000-2001 SCHOOL YEAR FROM GRADES 8-12

  7. TEACHERS FOR THIS PROGRAM TO BE SUCCESSFUL, TEACHERS MUST CREATE A SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR THIS FORM OF LEARNING AND MUST UNDERGO EXTENSIVE INSERVICING

  8. ADMINISTRATORS OUR ADMINISTRATION MUST BE WILLING TO PROVIDE SUPPORT TO TEACHERS AND RESOURCES NECESSARY TO IMPLEMENT THE PROGRAM

  9. PARENTS THE PARENTS OF OUR STUDENTS MUST UNDERSTAND THE REASONS FOR IMPLEMENTING IMP AND THE IMP CLASSROOM SO THAT THEY MAY PROVIDE SUPPORT AT HOME

  10. WHY CHANGE THE CURRICULUM? • IMPROVED TEST SCORES • PREPARATION FOR THE WORKFORCE OF THE 21ST CENTURY • CREATES A POSITIVE LEARNING ATMOSPHERE IN A MATH CLASSROOM • EXPOSURE TO MATH TOPICS NOT USUALLY TAUGHT IN A TRADITIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SEQUENCE

  11. TEST SCORES OPEN-ENDED PROBLEMS ARE NOW PART OF THE PSSA TESTING , REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION FOR THE CLASS OF 2003, AND IMP PROVIDES STUDENTS WITH PRACTICE ON SUCH PROBLEMS

  12. TODAY’S WORKFORCE • PEOPLE NEED TO WORK WELL IN GROUPS • PEOPLE NEED TO WORK WITH TECHNOLOGY • PEOPLE NEED TO BE GOOD PROBLEM SOLVERS • PEOPLE NEED TO COMMUNICATE THEIR IDEAS

  15. HOW DOES IMP CORRESPOND TO THE DISTRICT INITIATIVES? • DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION • USE OF TECHNOLOGY • COMMUNICATION • COOPERATIVE LEARNING • VARIED ASSESSMENTS • HIGHER LEVEL QUESTIONING • INTEGRATION

  16. DIFFERENTIATED LEARNING STUDENTS CAN WORK ON THE SAME PROBLEMS IN A VARIETY OF WAYS AND IN VARYING DEGREES OF DEPTH WHICH ALLOWS FOR HETEROGENEOUS CLASSES

  17. USE OF TECHNOLOGY • STUDENTS WILL BE ASKED TO USE THE GRAPHING CALCULATORS (TI-82 OR TI-83) AS A TOOL TO BOTH EXPLORE AND SOLVE MATHEMATICS

  18. COMMUNICATION • STUDENTS ARE ASKED TO EXPRESS THEIR THOUGHT, IDEAS AND CONCLUSIONS IN WRITTEN FORM • STUDENTS ARE ALSO ASKED TO MAKE FORMAL CLASS PRESENTATIONS

  19. COOPERATIVE LEARNING TEACHERS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE STUDENTS SIT IN GROUPS OF FOUR AND MOST CLASS ACTIVITY IS CENTERED IN THE GROUP AND NOT THE TEACHER

  20. VARIED ASSESSMENTS • HOMEWORK • INDEPENDENT CLASSWORK • GROUP CLASSWORK • IN-CLASS TESTS • TAKE-HOME TESTS • PORTFOLIOS • PRESENTATIONS
