  1. 6-1 & 6-2 Percents I can write equivalent fractions, decimals and percent. Now set up the left side of the page & complete: Page number Lesson title Learning goal What I know:

  2. 6 100 = 6% Vocabulary A percent is a ratio of a number to 100. The symbol % is used to indicate a percent. • PERCENT Reading Math The word percent means “per hundred.” So 6% means “6 out of 100.”

  3. shaded 32 shaded 66 _______ ___ _______ ___ total 100 total 100 Additional Example 1: Modeling Percents Write the percent modeled by each grid. A. B. = 32% = 66%

  4. shaded 44 shaded 75 _______ ___ _______ ___ total 100 total 100 Check It Out! Example 1 Write the percent modeled by each grid. A. B. = 44% = 75%

  5. 28 100 28% = 7 25 7 25 = Additional Example 2: Writing Percents as Fractions Write 28% as a fraction in simplest form. Write the percent as a fraction with a denominator of 100. Simplify. So 28% can be written as .

  6. 90 100 90% = 9 10 9 10 = Check It Out! Example 2 Write 90% as a fraction in simplest form. Write the percent as a fraction with a denominator of 100. Simplify. So 90% can be written as .

  7. 17 100 Additional Example 3: Writing Percents as Decimals Write 17% as a decimal. Method 1 Use pencil and paper. Write the percent as a fraction with a denominator of 100. 17% = = 0.17 Divide 17 by 100. Method 2 Use mental math. Move the decimal point two places to the left. = 0.17 17%

  8. 24 100 Check It Out! Example 3 Write 24% as a decimal. Method 1 Use pencil and paper. Write the percent as a fraction with a denominator of 100. 24% = = 0.24 Divide 24 by 100. Method 2 Use mental math. Move the decimal point two places to the left. = 0.24 24%

  9. A group of students plan to collect 2,000 cans of food for a food bank. After 10 days, they have 800 cans of food.

  10. 0.2 0.6 0.8 1.0 0 0.4 80% 60% 20% 0 40% 100% 800 1,000 2,000 1,200 1,400 1,600 1,800 0 200 400 600 2 5 4 5 3 5 1 5 5 5 0 800 2000 2 5 The model shows that 800 out of 2,000 can be written as , , 0.4, or 40%. The students have reached 40% of their goal.

  11. 70 100 7 10 Additional Example 1: Writing Decimals as Percents Write 0.7 as a percent. Method 1: Use pencil and paper. Write the decimal as a fraction with a denominator of 100. 0.7 = = Write the numerator with a percent sign. = 70% Method 2: Use mental math. Move the decimal point two places to the right and add a percent sign. 0.70 = 70.0% = 70%

  12. 30 100 3 10 Check It Out! Example 1 Write 0.3 as a percent. Method 1: Use pencil and paper. Write the decimal as a fraction with a denominator of 100. 0.3 = = Write the numerator with a percent sign. = 30% Method 2: Use mental math. 0.30 = 30.0% Move the decimal point two places to the right and add a percent sign. = 30%

  13. Additional Example 2: Writing Fractions as Decimals 5 8 Write as a percent. Method 1: Use pencil and paper. 5 8 = 5 ÷ 8 Use division to write the fraction as a decimal. = 0.625 = 62.5% Write the decimal as a percent.

  14. Check It Out! Example 2 3 5 Write as a percent. Method 1: Use pencil and paper. 3 5 = 3 ÷ 5 Use division to write the fraction as a decimal. = 0.60 = 60% Write the decimal as a percent.

  15. Check It Out! Example 2 Continued 3 5 Write as a percent. Method 2: Use mental math. 3  205  20 60 100 Write an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100. = Write the numerator with a percent sign. = 60%

  16. 27 50 Additional Example 3: Data Analysis Application If 27 out of 50 people surveyed have the newspaper delivered to their home, what percent of these people have the newspaper delivered to their home? Set up a ratio. 27 out of 50 = Use division to write the fraction as a decimal. = 27 ÷ 50 = 0.54 = 54% Write the decimal as a percent. 54% of the people have the newspaper delivered to their home.

  17. , or 50% ≈ ≈ 27 50 25 50 1 2 Additional Example 3 Continued CheckUse estimation to check that the answer is reasonable. Because 50% is close to 54%, the answer is reasonable.

  18. 11 50 22 100 = Check It Out! Example 3 If 11 out of 50 students surveyed have blue backpacks, what percent of the students have blue backpacks? 11 out of 50 = Write the numerator with a percent sign. = 22% 22% of the students have blue backpacks.

  19. , or 20% ≈ ≈ 22 100 20 100 1 5 Check It Out! Example 3 Continued CheckUse estimation to check that the answer is reasonable. Because 20% is close to 22%, the answer is reasonable.

  20. Right side Notes • 3 steps to turn a fraction into a percent: • Divide • Move the decimal 2 places to the right. • Add the % at the end of the number

  21. Whole Halves Thirds = 33% Fourths = 0.25 = 25% Fifths Sixths Eighths Tenths Twelfths
