  2. What is a Percent? • Percent means “for every 100” • Percents are written using the percent symbol (%) • 40% means for every 40 out of 100 • Percents can be expressed as fractions and decimals.

Converting Percentage into fractions • Review • Fractions are made up of a numerator and a denominator • The numerator represents the part • The denominator represents the whole • A percentage represents a part of a whole, where the whole is 100 • Because a percentage is a number out of 100, they can be expressed as fractions where the denominator is 100 • For example, 85%=

  4. Example • Convert 25% into a fraction • Step 1 • Write the percentage over a denominator of 100 • 25% means 25 out of 100, so it can be written as • Step 2 • Simplify the fraction. • =

  6. Converting Percentages into decimal numbers • To change a percent into a decimal, move the decimal point in the percentage two places to the left and remove the percent symbol • Example • Change 25% into a decimal • 25% 25.0% 0.25 • Therefore, 25% can be written as 0.25

  8. Turning Fractions into Percentages • Example: Henry got 16 out of 22 questions correct on his math quiz. What percentage of the questions did he get correct? • Step 1 • Identify the fraction • Step 2 • Calculate the decimal equivalent of the fraction • 0.72727….. • Step 3 • Write the percentage. • Multiply the result by 100,, and place a percent symbol after the answer. • 0.72727…..x 100 • 73%
