  1. Bell Ringer War Fair Science Rough Draft Due February 11th…Are you ready? Take out your notes and begin writing down the following requirements: Section 1: Write a one paragraph summary of your science event. Section 2: Write a one paragraph description of an experiment that was part of your science event. Section 3 Option A: Write a one page description of the relationship between your War Fair topic and science event. Also discuss how they influenced each other. Section 3 Option B: Perform the experiment (or one that is very similar) to that you described in section 2. Then type a full lab report. Use sections 1 & 2 as your “observations.” Section 4: MLA citations (citation machine or Purdue 0wl)

  2. Example Using Our Core Question How can the knowledge of chemical reactions be used to explain important biological and geophysical phenomena such as explaining the formation and abundance of the elements, radioactivity, the release of energy from the sun and other stars, and the generation of nuclear power?

  3. Section 1: Write a one paragraph summary of your science event. Radiation is a controversial topic that can have many benefits and disadvantages. There are medical applications such as the treatment of cancer or as a medicinal tracer in diagnosis. Montana is famous for its radium deposits found in rocks under many of our communities. Radium is radioactive and transmutates into radon requiring professional mitigation. On going studies of the nuclear power plant, Chernobyl, indicate that nuclear disaster has long term effects. The former U.S.S.R. has a grave yard of nuclear submarines at port rusting into our oceans. Japan’s recent disaster with a fission power plant and a tsunami spurs concern for our oceans as well. There is significant concern with how to dispose of nuclear waste. Although radiation has many benefits, conflicting views on rights and responsibilities of radiation has become a global issue.

  4. Section 2: Write a one paragraph description of an experiment that was part of your science event. On April 26, 1986 the unthinkable happened. In the northern Ukraine a nuclear power plant, more well known as Chernobyl, melted down. Twenty eight people died due to radiation but an estimated 5 million people in Belarus, Russia and the Ukraine suffered from the fall out of radiodines produced in the disaster. For the past 25 years, the Ukraine, Belarus and the U.S. has been conducting research in epidemiology to follow the continued devastation.Studies focus on occurrence of thyroid cancer in leukemia in both clean up workers and children. The National Cancer Institute reported that a study of 13,243 workers in the first round of screening had 45 related cases of thyroid cancer and in the 2-4th rounds of screening an additional 65 cases developed. Their progressive study also diagnosed 110 cases of leukemia, 17 cases of myelodysplasia and 10 multiple myelomas that were a direct result of exposure…..Continue with details of the study

  5. Section 3 Option A: Write a one page description of the relationship between your War Fair topic and science event. Also discuss how they influenced each other. Science and technology development are interdependent. With this increased knowledge new questions arise such as: Is it a right for countries to dabble in nuclear power and weapons? Should policies be developed to control not only nuclear development but also how nuclear wastes are handled? Who is responsible for cleaning up nuclear waste? Is it the right of a country to use nuclear submarines? Whose responsibility is it to decide if nuclear wastes should be sent into our sun for disposal? To answer these questions, the United Nations has attempted to establish policy and procedure. These policies and how science/your topic have a relationship would continue for a page MINIMUM…

  6. OR!!! Section 3 Option B: Perform the experiment (or one that is very similar) to that you described in section 2. Then type a full lab report. Use sections 1 & 2 as your “observations.” The Half Life Lab would be PERFECT for this topic! Write Question, Hypothesis, Experiment, Data, and Conclusion

  7. Section 4: MLA citations (citation machine or Purdue 0wl) Just copying and pasting DOES NOT WORK! You will need to go to Citation Machine or Purdue Owl or any of the free sites. Your English teacher has gone over with you the requirements. http://chernobyl.cancer.gov/leukemia_ukraine.html
