  2. What if: • Your facilitator asks you to find a specific article. • You have a bibliography and want to find the full text to the listed articles. • You want to see what the new articles are in a recent issue of Harvard BusinessReview—or any other journal. Let’s look at these scenarios…

  3. First, let’s look at the tools you can use • Start at the OCLS home page. You should know it by now. • Click on: Links to Resources • Click on: Searching for Journals at IWU • In the Find the Journal search box, you can type journal titles—not article titles.

  4. This specialized search engine… • Allows searching journals to identify their location in the Jackson Library • or in an online database that IWU has access to

  5. Let’s work through the 3 scenarios: • An article referenced by your facilitator. Your facilitator wants you to read this article: Taylor, A. (2006). Superman or the fantastic four? Knowledge combination and experience in innovative teams. Academy of Management Journal, 49, 723-740. Let’s find this article …

  6. Start at http://www.indwes.edu/ocls Click on Journal Titles

  7. You will need to enter your last name and your student barcode # from your student ID card.

  8. Type in the journal title. Click on Search. Note that if a title starts with a, the, an, you should drop it when typing it in.

  9. Here is your title. According to the dates shown and the date you need, take a link to one of the listed databases. We’ll link on Business Source Premier.

  10. Now you can locate the needed year. Remember, ours is August 2006.

  11. This retrieves all the articles that were in the August 2006 Issue of Academy of Management Journal. Note that there were 13.

  12. Locate the specific article you need from the group of 13. There is full text available in PDF Full Text.

  13. Our next scenario: • You found a citation in an online bibliography on transactional leadership and want to find the full text for it.

  14. Once again, type in the journal title Note that this one is only available in Jackson Library. You can go to the Submit Request form on the OCLS home page and copy/ paste/type the needed reference. The article will be scanned and emailed to you.

  18. Some tricks to help you search efficiently • If a title has the word “and” in it, you can use either and (spelled out) or the ampersand (&). • Always use the link from the OCLS web pages. (http://www.indwes.edu/ocls; Journal Titles (under Key Links or on the gray toolbar.

  19. Some tricks to help you search efficiently • If you only remember some words in the title, not the first word, then change the bullet from Begins with to Contains:

  20. Some tricks to help you search efficiently • If you are simply interested in journals in the area of finance, then use the Subject tab. • You can select your topic and then peruse the journals on Finance.

  21. Some tricks to help you search efficiently • Check your spelling. If you misspell within a word, the search engine won’t find your title, e.g. Journal of Business Ehtics will not be found. • If you get no results, and your spelling was correct, you can request your article from OCLS. OCLS will use Interlibrary Loan to secure it from another library. This process can take from 3 days to 10 days, so be sure you have that kind of time available.

  22. In Review • Using the Journal Titles link, allows you to identify journal titles and then more specifically, what years of that title are available so you can retrieve specific articles electronically or request them from OCLS.
