  2. RISE TO POWER • born in 1925 in Cambodia with the name SalothSar * formed a band of rebels in the Cambodian jungle in 1962 * led the Khmer Rouge (Red Cambodians) from 1963 until his death in 1998

  3. LEADER OF COMMUNISM • Pol Pot gained support after the U.S. bombed Cambodia during the Vietnam War. * He planned a communistic farming society and encouraged a “Super Great Leap Forward” similar to China’s “Cultural Revolution.”

  4. LEGACY • “Killing Fields” • An estimated 1 – 3 million were killed or died as a result of the policies he enacted – 25% of the country’s population.
