  3. Types of Robots • First Generation • Are not equipped with sensors • Second Generation • Are equipped with sensors • Automata • Only do one repeated task over and over again • Micro Robots • Are used for medical diagnosis

  4. Parts of Robots • Manipulator • The arm of the robot • End-Effector • grippers • Sensors • Touch sensors help detect obstacles • Sonar detectors are used to help mobile robots avoid obstacles • Computer • The brain of the robot

  5. Uses for Robots • Education • Program language called LOGO • Industry • More effective than humans • Medical field • Medical diagnosis • Space program • Space exploration

Three Laws of RoboticsWritten by Isaac Asimov • A robot may not injure a human being, or through inaction, allow a human to be harmed. • A robot must obey orders a human being gives unless they conflict with the first law. • A robot must protect its own existence unless that conflicts with the first or second laws.

Facts • Jacquet-Droz invented a writing doll. • The word robot was first used in the play “RUR” • Robots cannot think for themselves. • More robots are used in Japan in industry. • 90% of all robots are found in factories. • Robots do everything from cleaning up nuclear waste to traveling to Mars.
