  1. FINAL PRESENTATION Esteban R. Ramirez Hedrick Elementary, El Centro, California CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology

  2. I focused the lesson in the 3rd grade VIPS Science Rocks’ Unit. Unfortunately, the VIPS Science Program lacks in teaching meaningful content. I was interested in improving and extending the content of the science unit with more meaningful activities that assure higher level learning of scientific concepts and content. My name is Esteban R. Ramirez, and I teach at El Centro Elementary School District, in El Centro, California.. Estebanlcsw@hotmail.com The Lesson and Myself

  3. I expected to, most importantly, learn to integrate classroom teaching with technology and the internet. I also expected to become more familiar with the software available, especially Excel and Power Point. I am happy to see that the program accounted for different levels of technology use in the classroom, and offered the necessary tools to implement them. I am satisfied with the pace of the program, and how everything came together towards the end. My Expectations

  4. I feel very happy with the final outcome. Most importantly, I am now encourage to integrate the internet in the classroom! For the first time, I used the internet in a teaching unit. I had previously used the internet as an information source. I am very satisfied with how I integrated the use of the internet in this science unit. I am also very proud to say, that officials from Sacramento representing the VIPS science program observed me doing this lesson. It appears that they had a positive view and requested further information in the development and resources of my lessons. I only regret, that the technology in the classrooms is very limited. The use of a small television as a projection tool is not a very effective way to go. However, the final outcome was very productive for the students. I am also very happy to have gained a good understanding in how to implement Microsoft’s Excel and Power Point in the classroom. I fully intend to use these tools in my lesson planning next school year. My Realities

  5. My Successes • Used the Internet in whole class instruction. • Used the internet to reinforce concepts with visuals and concrete examples. • Students were able to clearly identify what activities were required. • Provided a richer selection of resources for my students. • I was able to integrate Excel and Power Point in lesson planning.

  6. My Shortcuts • Very limited access to Technology. Need a computer lab with full access to internet for whole class instruction at least 2 hours a week. • No access to a screen projection unit. • Could have integrated the richness of the internet in whole class instruction with proper technology.

  7. The culminating assignments are represented by the blue, red and yellow bar. Students were not scored with a grading rubric. Students were encouraged to complete their assignments. Emphasis, was not placed in letter grades, but completion of activities and student participation. Student Data and Results

  30. Revisions • There are three major changes I made to my lesson, • I paired student activities in groups of three. There was at least one leader student to keep the group in focus. • All students were required to participate. For the first time, grading was based on participation and completion of assignments. No letter grades were given. • Students participated with teacher in finding Rock related sites and obtaining more information. Students learned how to use the internet to find more information.. • Totally, revised and changed the original VIPS science unit.

  31. Summary I feel very comfortable with this experience. I used a typical science lesson, and improved it by integrating technology. For the first time, I integrated the use of the internet as teaching tool. I was impressed with the amount of resources and aids the internet can offer to improve students’ interest. Nevertheless, even with limited resources the use of technology can be useful. I hope for the time, when students will have full access to the internet, and a screen projector that can make a great visual learning tool.
