Evaporative Cooling System • Evaporative fluorocarbon (C3F8) system cools the Pixel and SCT volume inside thermal enclosure • System has to remove about 60kW of heat from detector • Like a normal refrigerator Compressor Condenser Superheated Vapor State Liquid at room temperature Heater Capillaries Expands to saturated state Detector Structure Residual Liquid Suzie Sheehy CERN Summer Student Program 11th August 2005

Pixels: 88 Barrel: 44 EndCap: 36 x 2 Total = 204 Heaters Heaters Heater unit • Need a system to: • monitor the temperature, current and interlock status of each heater. • provide alerts when approaching abnormal or unacceptable values • control to rectify problems (provided by a different system) 3 x ELMBs Suzie Sheehy CERN Summer Student Program 11th August 2005
